5spd Shifter Movement. Normal?
I just bought my first '97 spd Maxima a month ago. I've been noticing a slight movement of the shifter whenever I hit the gas pedal while moving. It's especially noticable when it's in the 4th gear. Is this normal or do I need to have it checked? Thanks.
that's normal
My '99 does it, my old '90 RX7 did it, my '87 Escort did it. The shifter wiggles a little when you hit the gas and let off, it's a function of the sideways rotational motion of the gears in the transmission.
No problems buddy, happy shifting!

The shifter motion is normal, but the cause has nothing to do with the gears inside the tranny. It is the result of the engine/transmission unit rocking on its flexible mounts. If you ever notice a marked increase in this shifter motion, that's a clue to check the condition of the mounts.

HAHAHA!!!! Dammit I knew DBM would correct me on that one when I posted it. I knew the movement was normal, but I had no idea what caused it, so I made something up (of course nothing that would cause any harm if taken as gospel...). Anyway thanks Daniel, you've shown how ignorant I am yet again!
