Egr Tube
#9
I was able to remove 3 out of the 4 bolts.. the last one, impossible to slip my wrench over ( since another tube is not leaving enough space)...
someone on the board simply hacked/sawed off the tip of the screw ( the threaded part that is sticking out)... and voila..
if I remember correctly, the correct wrench size is 12mm me thinks..
I have to do my EGR cleanning as well..

you do NOT need to pull off the manifold. it is actually quite easy to get to (assuming you are talking about the small tube that usually gets blocked and not the large one).
you will need a ratchet, 10mm socket 12mm socket and maybe a 5mm socket. then some vise grips to remove the temp sensor from the small pipe once it is off. no crows feet needed. no wrenches needed.

Not sure how you guys got to the egr without removal of the UIM. Did my 00vi swap in the 30 degree weather this week and could barely get back there with almost everything off. 12 mm wrench all the way around. I actually had to dremel the end of the back bolt to. There wasnt enough room between that and the metal hose to get the tube actually out. No idea how you fit a socket either.

It takes a little time but it can be done. I used sockets too. IIRC, the socket I used has a tapered tip, so that helped. The rest was just old-fashioned grunt work. Knowing what I know now, I probably wouldn't do it that way, but the less stuff I have to remove, the better for me and the quicker I can get back on the road.

In order to get a box wrench on those bottom bolts of the egr tube you need to remove some bolts on the egr connected to the engine block. This will allow you to move the egr big tube just enough to fit the box on it just to break the bolt. After you can use the open end side to loosen the bolt off. When you replace the bolt take off the stupid washer. This allows easy access.

Speaking of the EGR, if you remove the EGR tube and run that thing open atmosphere, will it suck in atmospheric air? I'd imagine that would signifcantly reduce the carbon build-up in the intake manifold, as the re-circulated exhaust gas is pretty nasty.

I didn't have to take off the intake manifold or cut anything to take the tube out.
