Changing front crank seal
Changing front crank seal
Mine's starting to seep a little oil, so I intend to pull the crank pulley and change this.
I figure my electric impact wrench should loosen the nut, I might need my 2 jaw puller to pop the pulley free, and then I just pry out the old seal and tap in the new one.
Is it really that simple? Any tips appreciated.

My electric does 320ft-lb when fully charged. I should probably work with some penetrating oil first.
The FSM says to tighten to 30ft-lb, then another 1/6 of a turn. Dunno exactly what torque that will be, but probably reasonable.

what kind of elect impact do you have? do you use it for things like removing lug nuts? I ask because I bought one a while back that was rated for 275ft-lbs and it could not even spin off lug nuts so I returned it.
anyway - please keep us posted on your results. I too might try to replace that seal.

Ingersoll Rand IR 2530. http://www.irtools.com/IS/product.asp-en-2868.
It easily does lugnuts on my truck, and I trust it will handle axle nuts too. I cry tears of joy when I think about it. (I don't have space/neighbors for an air compressor)

a few more thoughts on this...
- I think you have to remove the crank pos sensor before you pull the pulley.
- I've never used a seal puller before so I don't know how they work. but you do no want to just "pry" at the seal with a screwdriver though. what you need to do is punch the front edge of the seal with a hammer & punch (or slotted screwdriver) so as to compress its circumference ever so slightly. this will make it much easier to remove. or just get the proper tool.
