well... last night driving with the snow my car slid twice hitting the curb pretty hard, this morning driving to work i notice that the steering is way off so i take it to get checked and it seems that the rack and pinion got messed up. Im wondering on labor prices for the installing of a new rack and also any suggestions on brands to look for or websites to look at.

Should give you an idea about how much labor is involved and whether you might want to tackle it yourself. He also includes a link to where you can get the steeing rack. Try any of the numerous sites out there for OEM as well, like www.nissanpartscheap.com. BTW, you might want to check out the NY forum or go to nycmaximas.org to find someone local who can do it for you for cheap.

 

You could have damaged a lot more than that.

Take it to a good alignment shop and have them look it all over.

You don't want to get into changing the steering rack unless you're damn sure you know what parts need changed. Really.

 

i know parts and labor will be around $500-$700, depending on brand of parts.

 

steering rack is about $150 from nissan. labor is prob around $200-$300

 

It all depends on what you bent really...the racks are pretty up in there so chances are you bent something else like a LCA or a tie rod end.

Only way is to stop by a local front end shop and get it up on a lift

My friend who drives a BMW 528i ran over a 4" high curb in a parking lot *idiot* with the right front wheel. He didnt think it was bad and drove it home that day. When he got it home, he looked and realized that the tire was bent inwards, he then got it towed. In the end he had about $700 worth of damage. He brought it to a good allignment shop, which i would reccomend you do. Dont mess around with this type of thing.

i had the car lifted and thank god the tie rods and control arm were not bent...
yeah im def. not going to mess around with this and take it to someone who knows really what they are doing..

 

That price looked awfully low, but I looked it up, and yep indeed it's under $150.

If I had known the Nissan rack was that cheap, I would have installed one from Nissan instead of the low mileage rack I got from a salvage yard. I think I even paid $100 for that used one, ugh.

but keep in mind that that is "short", in that it doesn't seem like it includes the inner tie rods or boots, etc. (referring to the steering schematic on www.nissanpartscheap.com).

well... the car slid on saturday when it was snowing here and i wasnt expecting the snow and i had my rims on with non-all weather tires on ... sucks..but **** happens... umm one question, whats the pinion and its purpose?
