FSM is normally too vague for the weekend mechinac in some cases. but a combo of a haynes and FSM will take care of most confusion because you can cross reference.

I never owned a haynes/ chiltons. I've looked at the FSM many times its great but not really "handy", I used some haynes and chiltons at work either one does the job.

No matter which one, the FSM is still VERY helpful to suppliment it.

Nice to have both to compare to, but I've found Haynes to have more errors than Chiltons on several vehicles.

yeah, FSM beats all in my opinion. I have chiltons manual which is useless for diagnostics (codes are useful) but it does supply some nice pictures.

At $15 each, you should get both. Haynes is generally better, but Chilton has come through for me a few times, where Haynes failed. Download the FSM for free.

Most (80%+) of the time the Haynes is better - but not always. Every once in a while, Chilton's is better. For instance, changing the automatic transmission filter. Chilton's is way better. They actually mention that the pan bolts are not re-usuable, they mention the drain plug washer is not re-susable, etc. Haynes doesn't even mention it! So, I say, for $15 each, get them both. I always read both before starting a project. Also, get the FSM (.pdf version for free on-line since the real deal is $150). Read all three first. I always learn something beneficial from each one and it makes the job easier/better.

I have the Haynes and it has served its purpose many times. It had a great wiring diagram for the entire Bose audio system, which made my audio installation a breeze. Although as others have pointed out, the Haynes has failed me on a few ocassions with instructions as unenlightening as "remove the engine." (Not that it says that specifically, but something along those lines).

If this is true, the way to get around that is simple. Get a used copy from Amazon.com or ebay for the least amount of years covered. This is how I was able to obtain manuals for my truck. I didn't want a manual that covered 10 years from 89 to 99 when my truck is a 91. I found the old Haynes that covered 89-91, published late 91. Only has what I need, no extra crap and no deleted stuff.

agreed.

usually what one of them lacks the other makes up for, and with 2-3 references you can usually find the info you need.

My personal experiences with both haynes and chilton is that the chilton manuals are more thorough, but im talkin about the big ones that are like 500 pages. generally both will have some bad info etc. but for the price I agree get em both.
