just changed my oil yesterday and put in 4 qts of castrol gtx 5w30

today i checked the level and it seemed to be MAX or barely over. i was thinking it would be below and i would have to add some more. my friend told me i should put 4.25 qts. tried searching online but couldnt find anything.

Barley over your fine. I think it actually takes about 4 quarts.

 

4.25 with filter change. (depending on which filter you install) and 4 litres is more than 4 qts.

 

My car took 4 quarts with a filter change. I also used GTX5w-30.

 

4 liters = 4.226753 quarts

ive always used 5 qrts. read in more than one place that correct amount for our cars is 4 1/2-5qrts....dont know why everyone on here thinks its only 4?

 

5 quarts will stress the seals.

 

And it is 4.25.

 

FR33 is dead on with the 4.25

 

5 qts is how much i put in my last car, crown vic v8 4.x liter engine.

but dont know why you would need more?? someone?

interesting, barely related point: dirty oil pan/engine? use some engine cleaning? u can throw in 1 bottle of transmission fluid instead of engine oil. it wont do any dmg and will slowly clean it out. i think you maybe have to do this for 3,000 miles more than once. heres the article: last part "the facts..."

everytime i change my oil i buy 5 quarts. I use mobil 1 fully synthetic with K&N oil filters. I put in 4 quarts. Drive around come back n check the dipstick. Usually put in about 1/4 to 1/2 quart.

 

its 4.25 quarts MAX... thats all u should be putting in...

 

Why, have you neglected doing your oil changes?
When I do mine, I use either Nissan or Napa Gold filter w/1 qt.
Lucas Synthetic Additive & 3 1/4-1/2 qts. Castrol GTX 10w30.

 

Best method, after a bunch of changes you get a free one (minus filter) because of the leftovers

 

Lucas is a no no, it has a tendancy to foam up, and fomay oil doesnt lubricate well. Their syn stuff is better, but still your better off without it, GTX is great oil and doesnt need anything (although i would put some LC20 in it, if interested google lubecontrol) Also, i would run 5-30 regardless of climate, it cant be too thin upon startup.

 

I use Lucas maybe every 3rd oil change. (never had problems)

yea i dont know why but 4 qts topped it off for me. i had that extra .25 rdy but decided to go with the oil dipstick rather than the norm. you think its caused by some sludge buildup or something?

 

 

I always use 5, never had a problem.

 

I always use the manual specs. for oil. If you fill it higher than the 4.25 qt, you could potentially blow out seals.

 

The other reason too much oil is a problem is potential foaming. Foaming in the crankcase will lead to major temperature rise and lubrication problems.

When I put in 4.25 it looks like I put too much, also another Maxima friend hipped me to Supertech oil at Walmart, it runs good and is cheap. Any1 care to comment.

 

The point is that you could have a big problem. If you won't listen to everyone telling you that you can blow the seals then o'well. When it happens then maybe you'll put in 4.25. That's for everyone, not a shot at you or anything.

As for the post from maximafrenzy, you posted your answer. "Cheap" is the only word that matters in that post.

 

Supertech is actually a good oil. As are their filters.

 

You think so, I don't use it cause its cheap, what am I saving $10? I do not notice any difference in performance, my car actually rides pretty strong, shiiit it feels like a beast!!!

 

Supertech isnt bad, but be aware, you wont notice a difference if i put crap oil in your car, but your car sure will, so thats not a good way to judge oil...nor is its color after X number of miles FYI.

 

I used to put about 6.5 qts. in my previous car, Subaru SVX, so 4 seems like so little, but it will save me money on oil changes, so I don't mind. Also nice and easy to buy a gallon jug.

 

Thats the thing my cars performance hasn't changed since I switched from GTX, at least I noticed it feels strong and if the oil was bad it prob. wouldn't. I am not any kind of pro, but I can feel what my baby feels.....

 

Oil has only a minute effect on horsepower output. The real difference is wear over the long haul.

So what your saying is switch to GTX because of better wear for my motor? I've seen many ppl here recommend GTX but I never thought twice, until my buddy sug. supertech, he said its the same but if not better.

 

I'm not sure why so many people are so wound up about oils. There are many good oils, at all different prices. But each person's idea of 'good' is different. People argue all day long about oils (see bobistheoilguy.com) and either you argue about lab tests (which only apply to real life in a limited way) or they argue about your personal experience, which even with the most experienced people is still scientifically insignificant. About the only thing that is agreed is that pure synthetics are best, but conventionals perform well enough that most people will never see any difference even over the full life of a car. So really it comes down to value and how much you feel like spending.

There are many synthetics out there, and they definitely do better for wear than standard oils. But it's at a price, and the extra cost (especially for oils in the $8-10/qt range) is questionable at best. Among cheaper non-synthetics, I think the difference is very small - Castrol, Valvoline, Quaker State, etc, all make a good oil. They market like crazy to maintain the perception that the differences are big.

As long as you don't use something that is plain wrong for your application, you will have good results. By far it's more important to use the appropriate viscosity and change it regularly than what kind you use.

yeah, look at the oilguy website. THey have alot of fanatics that run tests on used oils. Even the cheapies-like supertech-should last 3000 miles and be ok. some of the cheaper ones break down faster and are more worn out after 3000 miles than their peers, but if you change frequently you are ok. Personally, you could change at 2000 miles and be well protected if you wanted to.
The worse thing that you can do for an engine is to start it after a cold start-that's where the majority of the engine wear comes from-but no one's gonna say don't start your engine. And the big key maybe filters-and supertech are better than most-or so they say on the internet.

 

If the outside temp never gets below 20F, is there any benefit of using 5w30 over 10w30? I always use Castrol GTX + Nissan OEM filters.

 

werd. i just did my first oil change since i got my max. started using gtx and oem as well. 10w is thicker so worse for colder temps. i would think maybe using the same 5w every oil change would be better than swithcing back and forth.
