tranny fluid swap

I am going to change out the tranny fliud next week. Can I drain it then start and run it thru the gears to drain more out?

yes. but if you want to do a proper flush, pull off the return hose line so that the old doesnt really mix with the new.

Let me clarify, I would drain the old fluid, start and run the car and go thru the gears with the drain plug still out to try and get the most fliud out I can. Then I would refill it with new fluid. I wouldn't think that doing that would cause any harm since you aren't putting a load on the tranny and would get most of the old fliud pumped out.

that would be an incorrect assumption.

Let me be more specific. put the drain plug back. fill the tranny up with the same amount that you have just drained. start the car working all of the gears catching what comes out of the return line. fill up and repeat until new fluid is coming out. do not run the tranny dry.

Just to add a little more clarification on what 2da mizzax is saying. Go to Home Depot and get a small roll of 3/8" plastic tubing from the plumbing department. It might cost around $2. Attach one end of the hose to the disconnected ATF return line and put the other end in an empty 1 gallon milk jug. If you have a 5 foot section of tubing, then you should be able to watch how much old fluid is displaced while you work through the gears. I went through around 12 quarts when I did this last year.

You will not be able to change ALL of it, but if you drain it, fill it, drive it a few miles, and then repeat the drain and fill process, you get somewhere around 95% of the crap out. Maybe more. I used to know the math but it has been a while since I have had an auto.

This is in the stickys. I'll give it one more pass.

This could work but is not what i meant since you will be mixing old with new. I meant a direct flush where new goes in one way and old comes out one way.

here is a great writeup....http://www.cardomain.com/ride/335521/3

That is the proper process. Do NOT try to drain ALL of it out, then just refill it. Make sure that you are adding the new into the transmission as you pump out the old, used fluid.

If you run it dry you will do damage.
