Oi! Now what?? V. Starter issue

G'morning y'all

This morning I went over to my car after not driving it all day Sunday (stood there chillin' for a day). I got to my car, pressed the clutch and went to start it. What I hear next I can best describe as the started engaging but not cranking. It was a whine but was not accompanied by the regular "chug chug chug" that you hear when the starter turns the flywheel. It "cranked" first for 2 seconds, stopped, tried again - same dealio but for about 2.5 seconds and I saw the RPM needle rise up. Then I stopped, tried it again and it caught up and started up fine, and drove fine.

So - is my starter on it's last legs or something?

hopefully it's the starter and not the flywheel ... starter is easy to replace.

if you're on ur original starter then that's probably the culprit.

Well damn, it did it again... 3.5 hours after parked, I went to my car to start it except it whined again. I let it after a second, waited for 3, then started my car just fine... wtf

just be careful where you go now. If it is the starter, park next to a hill since you're manual..-= )

What kind of sound did you get? Grinding noise? I had a similar problem on my '97 few months ago. Just like you described, key ON, noise, but no crank, key OFF, key back ON, the flywheel cranks, and this whole symptom lasted for about 3 months or so. Finally one day it just completely quit- key is in ON- nothing happens, battery still was good. It was a bad starter, you probably have one bad also, they give up slowly.

Def. not a grinding noise; more like it's trying to catch but doesn't catch - loud whine.

:sigh:

The fact you are throwing technical terms means you know what you are doing and saying and that I must follow your advise.

:tear:

most any part store should have a fairly affordable, fairly reliable starter. just have um test the new one ( itl be remanufactured) before they sell it to ya.

CJ, it is possible you are getting some binding in your starter... but what do I know... anyway, how about taking the starter off your engine for a cleanup and regrease? I believe master motorvate has a write-up on our starter.

You could do a better job than the sweatshop boys who do the work for AutoZone's suppliers of re_____ parts. If you go to AutoZone, inspect the part you get carefully before checking out.

I am going to be doing 90K service at my friends shop and we are going to take the intake out anyway to find out where the hell i have a leak (woosh sounds at WOT that shouldn't be there - stock intake).

I think we may take the starter out since its fairly easy and regrease it.

HOWEVER - given these choices:

23300 2Y900RX Hitachi Starter, Rebuilt $157.76 Core
DAS188 PPR Starter, Rebuilt $106.80 Core $70.00
SR 2268 X Bosch Starter, Rebuilt $114.88 Core $83.00

The core for the hitachi I think is 70 bucks... that might be actually a whole lot more logical to do, eh?

by the time you take it out regrease it and reinstall then hope it works you might as well just put the new one in while the old one is out

that samething is happening to me too, i know exactly what you're talking about and i follow the same procedures as you do key on, grinding noise and no turn over then key off-key on again and it starts right up... people have been telling me its a fuel issue like a fuel pump or a filter but its not the filter, i replaced it, others are telling me it might possibly be the sparkplugs i have yet to use sparkplug cleaner, but my personal opinion is either the fuel pump or the starter like everyone else is saying... is it cold where you live because its cold here (minnesota) and i also think the bad starter/fuel pump is accompinied by the cold

I think gunny11218's problem is the starter-both of my families 99s are having starter problems. Our problem has been like the above.-sounds like the grease after a number of years stops working and so the sliding bits inside won't reliably engage/disengage. So... may only need new greasing, but you may want to try a new starter, because it may have some worn parts. Dealer price quote $450-local mechanics $200-260 parts/labor.

I agree with others, pull starter off and regrease, I am having a similar problem and am planning on pulling the starter off and regreasing it myself.

What the hell... A new starter for me is what I posted above - 100 bucks - 70 for core and 20 bucks to my friend who has his own shop and will swap it for me...

Do yourself a favor and don't get a pepboy's starter even though it wasn't mentioned. I swapped out 2 bad starters. Was sick of it. Went to napa n got a starter. Started fine. Looked at the pepboy's starter, wow, the teeth was getting worn already from what i can tell, and it was NOT engaging all the time as it should since i can see that the line is NOT straight from the oil or what not. But the starter is relatively easy. I can do mine is around 45 minutes now...-= 0

Guyz! I had the same starter problem happen to me. Now my max won't start. Also the weather got real chilly (freezing actually) the last few days, maybe related.

Anyone have a link to a site explaining how to replace the starter ('99 maxima)? And tools needed? thanx!
