If you are referring to my grill it came like that. It's a Stillen grill. But if you are referring to the lower inserts (in the bumper) I used to have a set that I made out of rain gutter mesh that I cut to fit and had glued and strapped into the bumper. I did a poor job of cutting them and sanding them so the sharp edges started to scratch the paint so I removed them. It's very easy to do. Just buy the mesh and trace an outline on it and cut and sand it. You can either glue it in or tie strap it in. That's what the guy from eBay is selling. Already prepped mesh ready to slap on.

Sorry to be annoying but im sorta new at this and really want one, when you say glue it in or tie strap it in, what do u mean, where would i glue it into and tie strap it to where, if i do tie strap it, wouldnt u see the tie straps?

also after u cut them, u sanded the edges?

could u possibly bend the edges in and buy metal wire to put around the cut out piece and put it in like that?

also one last question, how do u take out the crappy grille that came standard with the maxima, i dont want to replace the whole thing, i just want to take out that plastic thing that has the nissan sign on it and put mesh in their too

thanks so much, i really appreciate this

Well you can glue it to the black gills that are in there already and around the perimeter where it makes contact with the bumper. If you tie strap them you will see the straps up close but I painted my tie straps silver to blend in with the mesh and they were almost impossible to see. I cut them and sanded them down lightly but not good enough. As for bending the edges it is possible but was very difficult to keep it uniformly shaped because there is a curve that you must contour it to. And for taking out the OEM grille I'm not sure since mine was a direct replacement. There are some members of this board that have just overlayed the OEM grille with the mesh. I think there is one guy here that even left his Nissan emblem on and overlayed it. I think his name is 95GreenGle but I'm not sure. I would just leave the OEM grille as support for the mesh but just remove the emblem.

If you search for grill or gutter mesh you'll turn up a lot more info. You may even find that guy I was referring to:

RE: Gutter Mesh Grill

I just finished my gutter-mesh grill, and it looks alright. The best thing to do is try and make a stencil, and where it won't fit/is scratching the grill, trim it. You can tie it in using garbage ties (cut off the white part so it is all silver). By using the garbage tires, you will have strong support that you cannot see because it is so thin and silver. I found that the bumper insert just stayed in there (make the fit a little tight). I'm sure you will scratch the bumper a little (not cursing you), and this is normal. You will also gash the sh*t out of your hand, and this is normal as well. For looks, you don;t want to leace the Nissan symbol under the mesh, so gently pry it off (I used a flat-head screwdriver) and you will be able to super glue it to the mesh. This will give a nice clean look, like it was professionaly done. You can super glue the mesh in, but I wouldn't do that, so that if you screw up you can take it off. I didn't trim mine too well, and I might have to get another gutter sheet and do it over (they're so cheap I don't even care). You might have to do this too, so don't worry. The sheets are under $2 each, and I believe that at Home Depot their real name is a "gutter guard". The are silver and about 20"x8x (a very good fit). If you know anyone who is good with arts and crafts, I would let them do it for you, because you will get a nicer fit. It is supposed to be easy, but I honestly found it a little hard. It took me about 2 hours, but I didn't do such a great job (trimmed a little too far in certain areas around the rim). Good luck - its a cheap method that should work if you take you time and are willing to buy more gutter sheets to perfect your work. Just trying to help.

I used clear silicone glue that you can pick up at a parts store but I think you can use super glue too. As for cutting it I had a multi-use set of hand shears that will cut through metal like chain link fence. I'm sure any wire cutter will do the trick. And for the chrome mesh you can either paint it with the so called chrome spray paint or try to fit the polished Trenz grill in there.
