3" exhaust
3" exhaust
will a 3" exhaust really kill my hp if im not boosting? the reason im asking is i want an exhaust but i just decied to go turbo so i need 3". so i was going to get the exhaust now and save up some money to get the turbo.
MagnaFlow's Frequently Asked Questions Question: Why ISN'T a bigger pipe always better?
Answer: Don't be fooled! Bigger is not better! Many people think that having the biggest diameter pipe is the best way to make power.
Not true. Due to a variety of factors, extensive testing is required. We've dyno'd extensively and our systems yield optimum power increases. Some manufacturers claim even higher horsepower numbers.
It is a fine line to reduce backpressure while maintaining good exhaust velocity. It is not about getting the biggest pipe, it is about getting a more efficient pipe diameter while maintaining exhaust velocity.
There has to be a balanced design to enhance the maximum engine output, exhaust gas velocity, and sound. For example, imagine blowing air through a straw (comparing it to a smaller diameter pipe). This would take time to release all the air from your mouth, and you would feel pressure in your mouth while doing so. Now imagine blowing air through a paper towel roll (comparing it to a larger diameter pipe). You will relieve all your air much faster and feel little or no air pressure in your mouth because of the larger capacity of the tube. This is why it is important to get the correct size piping in order to relieve backpressure while maintaining thermal efficiency.

Isn't it good when everything is breathing freely? I would of thought that feeling 'little or no air pressure' is a good thing, because that means the engine won't feel it, therefore releasing the exhaust much faster and more efficiently..

then why even ultra high performance cars don't go beyond 3" maybe some using 3.5"??
i did 387whp on my 240sx/sr20det using 3" but for the not so heavily modified n/a car 2.5" is more than enough

Listen man, I'll be straight with you. Think of how long it will actually take you to save money to complete a turbo setup. You have to find someone to custom fab you a feedpipe and a dumptube if your dont want a loud setup. You have to buy a turbine that is most likely going to be around $900+ unless you buy some used junk or some chinese junk. After all of this is considered, you realize that its going to take much longer than anticipated- and the whole time your 'saving', your running around with a 3'' exhaust system and civics are jumping you on the holeshot.
Im just telling you from experience, if your going turbo get a y-pipe for now and a muffler if you like rice, and when it comes time for turbo run a 3''.

Alright, I'll help you.
Think of it like this, when exhaust gas velocity is maintained a sort of 'scavenging' effect takes place. This actually helps pull exhaust gas out of the combustion chamber and moving along with the rest of the exhaust stream. With a 3'' system on an all motor vq, the velocity would not be high enough to produce this effect and it would be a dog until around 4300rpm or so when the vq starts to truly breath.

exhaust
im also trying to get an exhaust for my 97 GXE. so what really is the best size to go for? I was just about to jump on a 4" HKS Dragger with a stainless y-pipe combo I saw on ebay earlier so might that be too big? im hearing everybody say 2.5 is more than enough so whats the best choice?
