the best way to tackle this ANNOYING area is to take off your throttle body, take off all the intake piping or what have you. Then you can see it hidden below the throttle body mounting area, above it will be another circular piece which is part of the egr system. You are going to have a hard time getting at the 2 bolts and will most likely have to move alot of things out of your way, like the coolant hoses.
The easiest way, but probably a little intimidating, is to remove the whole upper intake manifold and then take a huge wrench you can get from a hardware store and remove the pipe that goes from the EGR valve to the exhaust, this pipe blocks the bolts that hold the valve onto its mounting location.

You'll have to look thru all the pics but that should help.
If ur standing IN FRONT of the car, it'll be on your right (driver's side), behind two coolant hoses. Another way is to say it is slightly in front of and underneath the IACV.
It's not near the firewall.
Taking off the upper IM is probably overkill and just something else that can go wrong. Between myself and 2damizzax (and others) we've done it w/o removing said piece. Just search or use Google to find some EGR related posts....
You could probably even PM 2damizzax directly. I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

A picture of it is shown on page 6-19 of the Haynes manual, as well as the method to check to ensure if it is working properly.
I haven't looked under my hood, but it is easy to identify. I believe it is on the driver's side closer to the firewall.
If you do not own a Haynes manual, go out and buy one before you attempt any repairs that are not routine.
