Better alternative to stock antenna?

I have grown tired of my ugly a** stock radio antenna. Is there something else out there that we can replace it with on our cars? Maybe a non-motorized unit that is alot shorter and black maybe???

Unless your an AM listener i dont think that antenna has much to do.

I have mines either unpluged or broken. As it doesn't go up at all. But i dont have a problem with FM what so ever. AM is nothing tho. But from my understanding i have an antenna built in to my defrosster

I broke mine off actually. Planning on just shaving it this summer. Cause its ugly. And my AM / FM is fine. No static at all
Besides radio is boring. Buy a CD deck and rip some music off limewire- It's all good.

All aftermarket decks as far as i know it will turn the antenna ON and make it go up (if it still works) when the deck is switched on.

I think powered antenna's are kinda cool though, i dont know what you guys are complaining about

I dont think the paint will stick though.

I am pretty sure it is stainless steel antenna and to paint that you would have to take it off, sand it down and paint it, and i don't think thats worth the trouble considering the paint is most likely going to flake off

My antenna works but the last 2 or 3 sections (the sliding parts) are missing, meaning before i bought my car someone cut them off with clippers. i want to replace mine with a new one from dealer. Does anyone know how difficult is it top take it off ? i just tried spinning it and unscrewing it, but it just spins and i dont get any action.

thanks for the replys guys, I really like the 350Z antenna, I think IM gonna go with that on. For $25 buck, you can't beat it. I just have to get my powered unit off there cause' the last 2 parts don't work and it is all greasy and looks ghetto...

Neways I don't really care about AM at ALL, but sometimes FM is ok. Anyone know which cars had the antenna built into the winshield? I do not think it was 4th gens right???

I believe any Max with the Bose audio system has the secondary antenna built into the rear windshield.

on the integrated antenna, it should be something I could see right, does it go along the top or something, it is in the glass like the defroster wires, right?

Pep girls sells a mast that is 13" long and wire wound similar to newer GM cars' antennas. It is around $18. Unfortunately you would obviously still have to purchase a lower portion of a standard antenna since ours is motorized and this is only a universal mast replacement. I use it on my other car. The reception is better then the stock one on those GMs.

Unfortunately, this is the only pic I have of that mast, and its not a very good one. You can see it if you follow the passenger side window pillar up towards the back of the car. Its above the corner. Because of the angle of the car, it appears longer than it really is.
-Sean

BTW : If you do want to take the replacement route. It will cost about $50, and take about 20 minutes. I have done it on my previous (2) 3rd gens. The reception does get better IMO, but I like the cleaner look of the power unit. Just the 3rd gens both needed motors, not masts. Its a simple swap. The antenna wire just unplugs, the power/ remote wire unplugs, and the signal wire simply plugs into the universal/ non-power unit base. Pretty easy.

sry to bring this back up, but thought I'd do it for anyone that is looking for a betteroption to the stocker. Found it on FLEA-BAY, and it looked ok and was cheap. I'm gonna put it on as soon as I get it and I'll post pics.

We'll see how it goes...

-Matt

edit: guess it would help to post the link...

Well, I finally got my antenna in the mail yesterday, put it on today and I don't know if I like it or not...

I kind of sticks out to the passenger side too much for my taste, but the install was easy as pie and I could not have asked for a better product for the price($17.99). Works great and does not leak around the base at all, I just can't decide if I like it or not- but it does look better than the stock one for sure, and maybe I dropped about 3lbs w/ removing the stock retractable antenna assembly as well.

Whatchyall think?

P.S. - I just took these pics an hour or so ago, and it was mad dark outside so they may not be the best. The mast is about 13" long and screws off, and the base can be swivled around 360' and the mast can be lowered down 90' each way...

Sorry.. me no like. if it was straight up and down be better rather than offset with that pivot joint.

People have retro-fitted a BMW shark fin style aerial which looks good

^^^ yeah, that's my problem with it as well.

If I went with the shark fin, I would have to fill in the hole where the stocker was at, not ready to go there yet. The Max will be getting a paint job here in a month or two though, so maybe then...

Let us know how the reception is when you use it more. I still use the radio, and the Pioneer HU + stock atenna FTL...even the really strong stations has a lot of static...
Thinking about buying the hidden antenna from that same seller.

reception seems ok, haven't had it long enough to tell yet though...

Yeah, we fill holes like that all the time at my dad's repair shop, it is a little involved and oyu have to repaint the entire panel and to make it look right, and since our cars are what they call "tricolor", it is a pain in the *** to get right again...

I'm pretty sure my 95 GXE doesn't have any secondary antenna built into the rear windshield. When my regular antenna is completely down (as it is now cause it's broken again) I get hardly any radio reception at all.

I duno if this is common for all after market decks but when i turn on my deck, no matter what is playing (cd / mp3 / radio / auxiliary ) my stock antenna automatically powers on and extends, it does not bother me cause i actually like the stock antenna. i like the fact that its tilted back and not at a 90 degree angle to the trunk, makes the car look "faster" hehe
