Hard Cold Start problem
Hard Cold Start problem
I dont know if this is a common problem with these maximas but i was going to purcade a 99 maxima 2 months ago and i experienced this problem so i ended up not purchasing it for other reasons but my cousins ends up buying a maxima that is experiencing the same problem.
Conditions:
Sub 40 degrees
Sitting overnight or for a long period of time.
Problem:
Car will start rev till about 1.5-2.0k and then reduce engine speed and die.
on restart it will try to turn on but seems like its flooded and a rich exhaust smell. doesnt matter if i hold on the starter it acts like it wants to start but it doesnt if it does grab it stubles at about 300-500 rpm for about a few seconds then raises idle and its fine. the reason this is a problem is because she wants to install a remote starter and it wont work due to the cold start issue.
Another note. if you start the car cold and accelerate it for about 5 seconds it will idle normaly and wont do the problem again until another cold start.
i havent replaced anything yet. i was going to go plugs, air cleaner, fuel filter route but was told that the IAC valve might be the cause as well. she doesnt have tons of cash so i dont want to change a million things. thanks in advance

I would recommend TB cleaner and not carb cleaner.
May also want to think about changing the ECTS.
ok so far. i took the car to my shop and i took apart the plenum. needless to say the motor showed its 145k miles. first off the egr tube was filled with cunk and nasty crap. the intake part of the egr tube was also blocked off completely. so i cleaned all the runner on both the plenum and the lower they were just filthy. tb was filthy i didnt take off the iac valve b/c i want to make sure i can get the gasket. i will let ya know what happened
