Door Locks Help

Can anyone explain how the door lock mechanism works? I have the service manual and the Chilton but they aren't helping me. My problem is the only way I can lock my front passenger door is by using the key. The automatic door lock do not lock or unlock the door nor does the switch by the door handle. I took apart the door to look at it but can't fit my fat head in the door enough to see. Any help? Do I need to replace the entire door locking mechanism? It looks as if all the parts move the way they are suppose to.

There are several rods that go from the handle and lock area to the actual lock mechanism (sp?). Check that all the rods are in place. Remove the door panel on your driver door to compair both sides to see if you can find the problem.
