Un-Bias Review

Um... M A X I M A. Sorry, but I personally think it one of the coolest Japanese cars ever (Skyline and NSX first - sorry). The CL? A common old person's car. The Maxima? 4 speeding tickets with 4 different girls in the passengers seat. Maxima Represent.

Maxima. Cheaper, faster, bigger, cooler, BETTER.
Acura. Smaller, isnt it a 4 cylinder?, just an overpriced honda if you ask me, MY UNCLE DRIVES ONE and hes like 60 something....
just my oppinion.
go with whatever makes you happy, as long as its a maxima.

I would prefer the 2002 Maxima 6 speed. However, since I will never actually own that, I prefer my '98 over the Acura.

I would take the acura over the max anyday. Its a better looking car stock. Plus the Acura "name" is a little more high end than nissan. TL's are available with things stock like navigation systems etc.. things the max just doesnt offer.. Sorry guys but thats just my 2 cents. Dont bash me for it.. I love my max, but would take the TL over it anyday.

not cool dude.

it sounds like you are just a little bored with your maxima. perhaps you need to spend a little more time (money) with it, and you will discover that maximas will rip acuras... who cares what the name sounds like really ? everyone knows that acuras are just jazzed up hondas...im not trying to bash you, i can see where youre comming from, the only thing that would swing me towards the acura is that it is new... so it will be around longer (maybe)...

another thing about your comment...i don't think the tl offers navigation standard, it's something like $2000 more..unless the new one offers it standard

also look at it this way, nissan is the basic of infiniti, honda is the basic of acura...nissan (basic) is in the comparable class with acura("luxury")

Aren't the new Maximas coming out with a Navigation system as an option, that also has 3-D type viewing? Not only that, who needs a navigation system? How often do people really use those things unless they suck and don't know how to get from Grandma's house to home and/or they drive to new places a lot?

your comments on nissan basic.. acura luxury etc.. make absolutly NO sense.. if you want to make a comparison you can compare infinity and acura not acura and nissan. i have spent alot of money on my car.. over 3 grand and still i would take the acura STOCK over it anyday. the nissan craftsmanship is half ***.. ex: the rattles, basic looking dash etc. and yes the rattles were bothering me WAY before the springs etc. i really think the acura is a better made car than the nissan. and even if nissan is offering higher end things such as navigation systems etc. acura has been offering them for a way longer time. i work at a nissan dealership and drive the brand new max's everyday. i took a ride in a 98 TL the other day and hands down that is a better car than the 2k1 max.

I don't get it, what do you mean hands down it's better? is it faster, does it corner better...I mean I have a 1984 Delta '88, don't get jealous, and it had a more confortable spongy ride, but that's not what the max is all about...i am not sure is the tl's engine one of ward's top 10?

The TL engine is great.. and in my opinion honda's are a hella lot more dependable than nissans.. Everyone around here gets all defensive when someone says that max's arent all that.. Well the truth is THEY ARENT they are an economical car that people buy to feel like they are wealthy, but the max is by NO MEANS a high end luxury car. AN acura TL IS. Infinity is comparable with acura yes.. because they offer the higher end things you would expect from a luxury car... more sound deadening material, better customer/dealer service, more luxury options, etc.. Maximas are great cars... but are very limited. I drive them every single day so please take my work. The TL is a classier looking car number one, the inside is a more comfortable luxury build two, the acura name is far better than the nissan name, and people who dont know any better look at the acura as being a better car. The accord and camry are two comparable cars for the max.. the TL is a level above with the I30, 3 series bimmers, and low end lexus.

What Can I Say?...

Daddy Fat Sacks is right. You do see 60 year-olds driving the Maxima, but think of this: How many Maximas do you see on the track? With Mods? Now how many Acuras? Do they even make mods for the 3.0CL? Both have their advantages, and no offense, but you know that if you all had CLs instead of Maximas you would take the CL. But there's always one thing you would have to give the Maxima its props to over the CL: S P E E D. Drive happy, drive well, drive fast. Maximas represent. (Personally I would take the Maxima over a CL anywayz... I mean...I couldn't fit all those chicks in a CL!)

This old guy likes the Max. The new CL would be a great choice but not the older body style. My fiance wants the older CL. Not making any comparisons here. Just my .02...

Umm.. I thought we were comparing a 97-99 Acura 3.0 CL to a max? Not a TL?

I whould take the Max hands down. BTW the 2.3 CL's offer a 5spd but the 3.0's do not.

A friend of mine has a 99 3.0 CL and I got to dirve it about 10 miles. The car has a nice interior and is nice and cumfy, ohh hell it even drove pretty damn good but still none of it's attributes were superior to a loaded down maxima or I30. I say I liked it quite a bit though. It's biggest draw back is there is now 5spd and I don't know how to drive a auto so..

MAXIMA! My dad just bought a 1997 3.0 cl and that is the reason I now drive a 1995 GXE Max. I have "borrowed" his car ONCE. The steering is much more tight - to the point that it is anoying unless you are in the city(do not take it on the highway - you will look like you are drunk). It doesnt accelerate like the max does, it takes a little longer to respond. The maxima is much bigger inside and that for me is a major plus. If you want a car that corners well and accelerates above average go with the acura. If you want a sports sedan that accelerates like a bat out of hell, has won the "one of the 10 best engines" every year since 1995, and a car with pasionet owners who are willing to give you information on how to mod/what to mod(just look at this site for proof) go with the max. The max is just a better buy PERIOD! Plus with the extra money you save by buying the maxima you can throw on some performance parts and be much faster than you would have been in the stock 3.0 cl.

4th gen Max. If it were a 3.2CL, I would pick the 3.2CL over the 5th gen Max. Actually, I'd pick the TL instead, since it's 4-doors.

The CL in those years came both 4cyl and V6. The 2.2CL was the 4cyl and the 3.0CL was the V6. A manual was available on the 2.2 4 cyl engine.

Those cars are based off of the Accord coupe in terms of body/chassis as well as engine.

You'd be better off spending the money on a used Accord Coupe.

The Acura CL might have a slight edge in handling, but I think the Maxima's buttery smooth and powerful engine more than makes up for it. The Max is also bigger and faster.

-V

btw, the question was the last generation CL which I don't believe had navigation. The TL from those years was a 2.5, not the 240/260hp TL/CL Type S from the current generation. To match up correctly, you'd at least have to use similar years and/or match up an I30 to a TL.
