.............. GOOOGLE!! Take your cats off baby! Yaya. Free that up. Adds like 30+ HP. Hell just remove everything after the manifold. It will not only make your car go faster. but sounds beastly. Make sure you have lots of advil though.

Maybe you should google search it too cus you have no idea what the **** you are talking about.

To convert from cali to fed spec, you need a fed spec front exhaust manifold and a fed spec ypipe and I think you may need an O2 simulator, cant remember if cali spec has an extra O2 sensor up front. Basically what you are doing is making the exhaust layout more simple. You will also get more power when adding an aftermarket ypipe because you are now getting rid of that front cat that is in the header.

If you switched the ECU to a Fed-spec unit, you would no longer need the 02 sim, correct?

CALI 1999 Maximas, the front pre-cat is built into header, two extra oxygen sensors to monitor pre-cats (total of 4), Swirl valve in the intake to improve emissions. Special aftermarket Y-pipe required and only 1 pre-cat can be removed. Also a real pain to get at the KS.

I wouldnt do that. Having a different ECU would make smog checks harder, if not impossible. All 99 maximas have the extra O2 sensors and the pre cat in the header, so you would have to swap in an ECU from an older maxima. Plus you have to worry about the key which I think is programed into the ECU. Swapping in another ECU would just be a huge pain. Much easier to just use some O2 simulators, or you can just go to an exhaust shop and have them drill some extra holes in your ypipe and header to fit in the extra O2 sensors.

What do you mean by "special" Y-pipe?
Is it possible to swap headers with an older max to get rid of the front precat? that would of course require some drilling for the extra o2 sensors right?

Did you read anything I posted? All you need is the front header from a fed spec maxima. As for the o2 sensors, you can either drill extra holes or get an o2 simulator.

The swirl valves only operate when the engine is cold. At operating temp they are open all the time.

The KS on a cali spec is just as easy as a fed spec vehicle. Only 2 extra bolts to remove will take the swirl valve actuator out of the way. Took me 15 minutes to change my cali spec knock sensor, it was easier then the fuel filter.

I agree about the swirl valve and knock sensor.
