JWT ECU guys(weird problem) - 97gxe mt using a 95se mt JWT ECU

I have a 97gxe converted to manual and I tried a JWT 95se MTfed spec ECU before and what happened is that It caused me to get a 10-05 CEL which is the EGRC Solenoid valve code. It caused my idle to fluctuate really high varying from normal 6-700 up to 1.5k and everywhere inbetween. It will sometimes drop back to normal in neutral at a stop but when I blip the throttle it shoots back up and stays up.

The car drove fine, I felt the power from the JWT but it really messed up my idle.

I figured out it was the JWT causing that because if I swap back my stock 97mt ECU, everything is fine and no 10-5 CEL.

What should I do? Was it because it was a 95? Will a 96 JWT be compatable? What do you 97 guys with JWTs use and why did I experience this problem?

Ive read over and over that a 95-96 will work in a 97 but I dont know why I have this problem. I really want a JWT but dont what to have this sort of problem

It's not because your ECU has a JWT program. It's because your ECU is from a '95. The emissions equipment was slightly different for that year.

When I first converted to 5speed, I borrowed a friends stock 95 5speed ECU for a year and Never had this idle problem. Would FED spec and CA spec cause this type of problem?

Not 100% sure. but i believe that yes that would create a problem (specifically with your ERG system and such).

Thanks. I got to do some more reading. I wonder if anyone has ever experienced what I did.

nismo-

that's interesting. i have a '95 gle converted to 5 spd and i have a '95 jwt ecu i bought from another .org member. what's weird is i get the 1005 code as well, and i even changed the egrc solenoid valve. so i think its the ecu.
and i have idle problems as well, but they are different than yours and i'm not sure if it's the ecu that is causing it.
does your car idle high on warm startups? b/c that's my situation.

Yes, when the car is fully warmed up, it will idle high as if it was cold. Sometimes it will drop down to normal idle when at a stop in neutral but as soon as I touch the gas, it will go back to the high idle. There is something about the ecu and my car that is not cooperating. This ecu works fine in a friends 95seMT which he has been using for years with no problems or CELs.

My egrc solenoid valve isnt broke or is anything faulty in my car since I put my stock 97mt ecu back on and no 1005 code or idle problems.

Im just wondering if all JWTs will act like this in my car or just this particular one that I tried?

I just got an email from JWT and this is what I was told about my idle fluctuation.

For a 1997 Maxima you should use a 1996 type ECU not the 1995 as the
EGR
system is different between the 95-96. Also a California emissions
type
ECU is different than a Federal type ECU. So the 95 ECU will still run
ok
in the 97 but the check engine light will always be on for the EGR
system.

The problem with your idle with the JWT ECU is you need to reset your
self
learn memory in the ECU. This can be done by having the 95 JWT ECU
installed and unplugging the TPS (throttle position sensor) connector
and
revving the engine above 2000 rpm a few times then plug the TPS back
in. This procedure should clear and reset the self learn memory to
take
care of your idle fluctuation.

Best regards,
Ben Pila (Technical and Sales Support)

Hope this works.

nismo-

did you try that self learn memory in the ecu procedure? i feel like if you did that it would throw a code b/c the tps is unplugged.
anyway, did it work?
did you say your ecu is for a '95? maybe we can swap jwt ecu's. i have a '95 but my ecu doing similar things to my car as yours is.

Bumping this thread back up to let everyone know that the unplugging the TPS method works in restoring your idle if you have high/fluctuating idle. I personally havent tried it yet since I bought a 96 JWT which gave me correct idle but aznsap tried it and he said it worked for him. Hope this helps if anyone else had the same problems.

for the millionth time the 95 fed spec is different than the 95 cali spec. the 95 cali spec is pretty much the same as your 97. a 95 cali and all 96's are the same.

I have a 96 MT fed spec JWT that I would trade for your 95 MT fed spec JWT if you want Nismo. PM or email me if you want to do it!

A 95 MT fed spec JWT works perfectly in my 95 GXE MT fed max.

My current 96 MT fed spec JWT does the exact thing you describe on my max so they must be different as you mentioned above.

When Krismax and I put in my MEVI, we were comparing the EGR systems on his max vs mine and they were really quite different which is probably why the above effect happens.

let me know asap. I'm going to Honduras in June on a medical trip and won't be back until June 27th.
