White SE cluster w/blue LEDs (KEPT OLD ODOMETER TOO!)
White SE cluster w/blue LEDs (KEPT OLD ODOMETER TOO!)
Hey guys i got my new white SE cluster and blue LEDs and i installed it tonight and im SUPER impressed. The color of the light is awesome. What i did was after i took the old cluster out i took the odometer/speedo out by taking out the 4 bolts in the back of the cluster, put it in the new white cluster so i could keep my odometer reading and all that. Well i managed to get the black face off and replace it with the white one without removing the needle then hooked all back up and i love it!
I want to say thanks to the members of this site that have helped me even not knowing it by the posts they made that i searched through to find out how to do this.
Now onto the pics! Oh and i also hit 100K tonight

Be forewarned, though, anyone that wishes to do this. Any color besides blue is going to get distorted a little. I went for the pure white look all through my interior but the gauge numbers have a slight blue tint to them that will add to any color, unfortunately
Actually taking out gauge cluster isn’t that difficult… if I did that then anyone can do it, too. There’s detailed write up about how to change gauge bulbs etc somewhere…
Well, I replaced the stock gauge (194 I believe) bulbs with blue but it was too~ dark. It’s just damn too dark at night… I also tried with red bulbs and it was worse than blue ones.
I ended up switching back to super white but I still want that blue color…
I haven’t tried the super bright LEDs, and I’m not sure about their beam patter or brightness. Any thought?
P.S. Congrat on 100k!

superbirghtleds.com make 194 replacement led bulbs which claim to have a wide pattern of light to be used in gauge clusters. i have been debating on gettin them but i dont know how the light pattern is gonna be
Nice Job!
Yeah it's a really simple install, should't take you more than 15 min. The longest part is thinking up what you want to do
Congrats on 100K!

Most of the SE cluster swap (including the odometer transfer) is in the "Interior" sticky. It also has info on lighting and LEDs in the dash/interior.
I am kind-of proud- I was the first known member to do the OEM SE face swap on a 4th gen while keeping an accurate odometer.

Thanks alot for all the compliments! And on the 100K milestone lol. I am sure i will get another 100K at least with the way i baby this thing!
I got the LEDs in a pack of 10 so i could have extra for the doors and maybe other things if not i will have spares. Got them on ebay from "besthongkong" I heave dealt with them before and the LEDs come from HK in about 2 weeks.

Theres a link to the auction where i got them. They are the inverted style so it spreads the light out to the sides and not all at a point creating "hotspots" on the gauges. These LEDs just pop in where the stock bulb was but you have to hook in your gauge cluster and put one in at a time and then turn on the headlight switch to make sure it works. If not take it out and flip it over and put it back in and it should work fine. There is already a writeup on how to get to the cluster to change out the bulbs here:

Would those work for the gauge cluster? I like the blue color of the VW/Audi's but i dont think i can replicate that color.
Also would the dimmer still work with the LED's?

how can i change the "shifter "P,R,N,D,2,1" light?? is it dificult? can i use a regular led?
BTW i used blue too here are mine i used regular leds, so theres a hot spot where the "100" and "120" are and in the fuel gauge but for some reason it looks worse on the picture they are 13,000 MCD so a lo brighter than they look

Real simple 1- 194 Led
take you about 5 min to finnish
For my old car I purchased led 194 with 6 leds from superbrightleds.com
After some advice I got from a boardmember from a different board, I took a dremel and flatened the tips of all 6 leds which better dispersed the light. It came out awesome with barely noticable hotspots, very close to the rest of you guys that posted pictures.
