HOW TO RACE AN AUTO ! LOOK !!!!
Whats up. Listen Carefully all newbies, and max masters, I need feedback....I just back from learning this technique...start off in 1st gear, jet it to 2 rpm's, let go on the gas, then shift into 2nd, then floor it up to 4 rpm's and either shift into drive (while foot is OFF gas) or keep goin to 60mph !!!,
IT IS FUN! AUTOMATIC'S, THIS IS THE WAY TO RACE...AND DAMN IT SOUNDS AND FEELS LIKE YOUR DRIVING A STICK !!!!
I'M NOT TOTALLY SURE IF THIS ****S UP THE ENGINE. IF DONE RIGHT, ENGINE IS NOT HARMED (so I was told). ANY ADVICE, QUESTIONS ARE WELCOME...HIT ME WITH ANYTHING U GOT !!!!!!!

Hold the Break? and let it go on 2 rpm?
Re: HOW TO RACE AN AUTO ! LOOK !!!!
Well, you don't need to go to first to start. To me, the car isn't staying there that long for me to need it. Plus I don't want to spin my wheels trying to hit second.
This is what I do:
Turn off the OD,
Start with the shifter in 2nd up to Redline
Shift to 3rd until I hit 85.
Powerband City.

Do you get a fast kick off from 2nd gear ? Redline...2 RPM's ? I cant remember. Does this get you goin fast ?

And Most Importantly, Will this hurt my engine, even if performed correctly ?
I Love Speed But I love my Max even more.
(Awwwe)
yall keep saying FLOOR IT
please tell this newbie what FLOOR IT means?
and basically
1. Gas and Breaks at the same time till 2 rpm at Gear 1(?) OD OFF
2. let go of the breaks and FLOOR(?) the floor
3. Maxima launches
4. change to Gear 2 at What mph?
5. change to D at What MPH?
6. let your maxima fly
Please answer those questions ^^
Thank you master Maxima's

So what about power braking, you guys haven't mentioned that. And what's this take your foot off the gas while shifting from 1->2 or 2->D? I've never heard that. Why is that? Thanks.
I'm not understanding this at all...
The only thing I can see this "technique" doing is give you a "manual" feel or sound...If you keep the lever in 2nd, and you start from a standstill, it will start off in 1st gear (yes, the lever is on "2") and shift up when appropriate on it's own...or if you want to make sure it holds until redline, go ahead and start in 1, then shift to 2 (but no need to let go of the gas, just keep the pedal down)...2nd will take you up to ~84mph. I don't understand why you would want to let off the gas if you're trying to accelerate? Maybe I'm not understanding what you are saying.
I dont understand why you would ever let off the gas when racing an auto....
The most popular technique for getting goot times so far has been:
Leave it in "D"
Power brake to about 1200-1400 RPM
Let off brake, floor the gas
Hold it this way and let the tranny shift itself.
Power braking all the way to 2000RPM only gets you more wheelspin and more heat in the torque converter, both of which will slow you down.

When you let off the gas in an auto, it confuses the shifts. Not good.

Power breaking is?
Power Braking...

Power breaking is? [/B][/QUOTE]
****
(Somebody please correct me if for some reason I have this wrong but...) Power Braking is when you are at a stop, ready to launch. You put your left foot on the brake and your right foot on the gas to no more than 2k rpms (don't know that number for sure, just going by what mzmtg said). When you are ready to go, pull your left foot off the brake and start flooring it with your right foot. I have read several articles on this including a Car & Driver article explaining that they use this method to get their best auto times. Good luck!

Letting off the Gas ??

Yea but if you dont release the gas when shifting don't you get a big jult ? That's what I heard anyways, and that its a BAD thing.

I have been driving the **** outof my auto tranny for 120k miles and have never heard a peep out of it. The whole point of the auto tranny is that you dont have to do anything but press the gas.

The jolt is not a bad thing. Technically, the harder, faster shift puts less wear in the parts in the tranny due to less slippage. This reduction is slippage also results in faster acceleration. Believe me, you wont harm your stock tranny by letting it shift for itself at WOT.

What's WOT ? Well, your Right about your auto tranny...my sis "races" hers sometimes and has 155k on her auto...still goin strong.
Well, I guess the only way for anything to really get done is to go experiment.
WOT = Wide Open Throttle
Go experiment for yourself. The technique I described earlier is what everyone's pervious experimentation has come up with. If you come up with something that is different and better let us know. You will need to back up your assertions with hard numbers. I know for a fact that the garbage you described earlier is not the fast way to get anywhere.

Indeed, whenever I am at a stoplight and there is somebody that wants to go, to give it my best shot I do this...
Powerbrake - Have your left foot on the brake, and your right foot on the gas. Give your car just enough gas so that your car tries to creep forward, but not too much that you get bogged down. You'll just have to experiment.
Anticipate the light change - Just keep your eyes open so that the second the light flashes green you simultaneously release your left foot from the brake while giving your car as much gas as you can with your right foot. (Pressing the pedal all the way to the floor or "Flooring It" or WOT)
Grip tightly the steering wheel, and try not to make too big of an imprint in the drivers seat as you blow by your opponent.
I have a 96 GXE Auto, with 96,000 Miles, a Tranny Cooler (just in case) and a K&N Drop-In, and I have yet to have a single problem with my tranny, or anything major for that matter.
Try it! You'll like it!

Hope this helps you out.
lifting ur foot off the gas will make everything horrible... you'll confuse the tranny and it'll think you're laying off and it wont put you where u wana be in the powerband...
just go with the pwerbraking when you start and maybe start off in '2'
i found with a car like the auto Grand Prix the best thing is to just floor it and let the tranny do its thing... i dont think there will be a big difference...

ALWAYS WORKS FOR ME!!!!!
I don't know if it's safe or not but i love doing this and i love the results even more. I experimented with it though. Okay here it goes. When i pull up to a redlight and some asswipe wants to race.
1) I put my car in neutral
2) and just for the hell of it hit on the gas pedal to give it the dramatic sound, hehehe
3) when the rpms hit just below one i relax and wait for the green lights
4) When it does hit for, i quickly hit into D and hit the gas
5) i FLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. you just have to feel your tranny. Don't do anything stupid like hitting the gas in N and changing to D. Wouldn't wanna be your tranny. Just feel the shifting from Neutral and just when you change from it hit the brakes. I love the results as i mentioned above

Professionals don't race auto's because all they do is learn how to shift. But for the other 99.9% of us, Auto's have tons of advantages, and the nissan's automatic transmission deserves the respect of all maxima owners. (especially w/ A VB Upgrade)
***Dont let People w/manuals make you feel down on auto's, when it come down to crunch time, and their human error comes into play, they will start to learn respect for auto maxima's.***
One more thing...Anyone see fast and the furious!?!?! That White Jetta was an....AUTO!

Bottem Line: You CAN join car clubs w/ an Auto, You CAN compete with them, and you CAN beat manuals. We Auto's arent wusses, just people who want to "Enjoy the Ride"

and i thought people said stick shift was harder
