1995 Maxima GXE Hard to Start

Intermittently, my 1995 Maxima GXE would be very hard to start. It would crank while the key is turned, but simply would not start (see detailed descriptions below). The car has approximately 90,000 original miles on it.

When this happens, I would normally pump the gas pedal several times and then turn the key, but even if the car does start after repeated tries like this, occassionaly the engine would immediately die down. In this case, I would have to step on the gas pedal all the way down to keep the engine running.

After the initial moments of struggling, the car would typically run fine. There was one instance, though, that the engine stopped in the middle of the road after driving only a few miles after start. I was, however, able to start the car again right away and drive on.

The battery is new. At one point, the ECU showed that the Temperature Sensor in the Fuel-Pump Sending Unit (not the fuel-pump itself) was faulty, so I replaced the Fuel-Pump Sending Unit (not the fuel-pump itself). But the problem still remains. Nowadays, ECU would
show 0403 (Knock Sensor), if not 0505 (no problems detected).

I have the same problem. Only when the car is cold... If someone can assist with that, it would be great!!!

I also have intermittent starting problems. The car never takes more than 3 attempts 5-10 seconds each. Sometimes it starts the first try. My mechanic said I have the old kind of starter which doesn't have enough torque?

Mine was fixed as soon as I fixed my knock sensor and replaced my fuel filter.
