Problem Changing Fuel Filter

I read up on changing the fuel filter and decide to give it a try. I followed the steps given in the stickies, remove the fuse, crank, crank, crank, etc...

First of all let me say that getting the top hose of the fuel filter was a pain and once I did get it off a had a steady stream of gas coming out of the top of the filter. I waited a couple of minutes, still streaming gas, I plugged it with my finger a couple of times, still streaming gas, looked at the situation from underneath the car and when I saw how much gas came out and was still coming out, I decided to put everything back together and find wisdom here on the .org before I try it again.

From what I read some gas is expected but I'm talking a steady stream here that showed no signs of letting up. Did I not wait long enough or did I miss something?

Thanks in advance!

When I did mine , I let the car sit overnight and changed it before Istarted the car. I got very little gas leakage that way. the fuel system loses pressure overnight.

Did you pull the fuse with the car running and let it shut off ??

...He said he that he pulled teh fuse, then turned it over 3x's.

Just remove teh hose from under teh TB with teh filter...It's easier that way.

I am going to do it this way next time...too much gas comes out trying to do it all at once.

With my second attempt I did the same thing but I also unscrewed the gas tank cap to help with the pressure then after getting the top hose off I turned the filter over and let everything dump out. Of course I'm sure it helped that most of the gas came out during the first attempt.

Yes, much easier, thanks for the input. And for anyone else doing their fuel filter for the first time crushing the filter parts that are underneath the hoses with pliers makes removal easier. And if doing it all at once...expect lots of gas .

so at the end u changed it right ? did u put the oem max filter or the 300z ?

when i changed mine to 300z some fuel came out but not as much as u seem to be describing, my filter change was a major biatch, the hoses were like litterally glued to the filter, but i got it after some great advice from members on here, used a flat head to pry the hoses off.

Would you recommend doing this on while the low fuel warning light is on to help prevent a huge loss of fuel or could this run your car dry? I want to do this when I clean the TB and IACV while putting on my new intake, but it doesn't sound like a quick 30 minute thing.

the gas lost probably wouldnt be enough to run dry but i wouldnt take a chance. i did mine and after everything was done, i had lost what seemed to be a lot of gas but when i went to start up the car and see if the gas gauge had dropped, i hadnt notice a significant difference. i would just throw in 10 bucks to be on the safe side.

Yea I will....and sorry for the noob questions but how long does it take to change the filter? Is it a quick (less than an hour) job that can be done by anyone with regular tools?

Yep the new one is in. I used an OEM Max since it was my first time doing it. I figured I would work my way up to the 300z.

And yeah I wouldn't have gotten it off w/o a flathead and even with one the job was tough. I made sure to lube the ends so the job will be easier for the 300z filter change in the future.

Regular mechanics tools, yes. If it is your first time it really depends on whether or not the filter will come off easy or be tough. I took about two hours but it was my first time, took two attempts (as you can tell by the thread), and the filter was a pain to get off. Take off the air intake up to the TB and that will help a lot, more room=less scratches=less blood.

it also depends if u got ABS or not, the lines really do restrict movement

i did not take the TB off but i took off the large hose that connects the intake to the IACV and the little hose right near by it, this gave me SOME restricted space.

scratches and blood i had. the friggin clamps that hold the filter on the firewal are MADE TO CUT u up and make u bleed. Nissan makes us pay the price -- either at the dealer OR WITH BLOOD!!!
