Hello,

I was under my '97 Maxima last weekend and I noticed it appears to be losing a small amount of transmission fluid from the linkage connection. Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem? Is it serious? Is there some kind of seal in there that can be easily replaced?

Thanks,

Hal

Help him someone!!!

I have the same problem. Small lickage not dripping from some sort of plastic device on the 5 spd tranny underneath the car. It looks like plastic, has one screw, and wires in black insulation coming from it.
1) what is it?
2) how much?
3) driveable because theleak is very tiny, just check the tranny oil every engine oil change?

You should be fine...mine does it too....as long as it doesn't start dripping I think it's normal...my gear lube stays at the same level, but it never hurts to check it every once in a while.

A minor leak may be tolerated, provided you check the lubricant level periodically and replenish as required.

You are referring to the Control Rod Oil Seal. It may be replaced with the transmission in the vehicle.

1) Raise the car and support it on sturdy jackstands.

2) Remove the shifter control rod from the yoke (nut and bolt).

3) Use a hammer and punch to remove the retaining pin. Take care to avoid damaging the boot.

4) Use hammer and chisel to remove the Control Rod Oil Seal.

5) Apply multi-purpose grease to the seal lip of the new seal, and then position it for installation.

6) Use a hammer and a deep socket of suitable size to drive the seal into place.

7) Install the retaining pin.

8) Reconnect the shifter control rod. Torque to 12 foot-pounds.

Please refer to the Haynes repair manual, page 7A-3.

No, you don't have the same problem. Weird Harold has a leak from the Control Rod Oil Seal. You have a leak from the PNP switch. There is an O-ring which prevents leakage at this site. That O-ring may be bad, or the plastic fitting secured with the one bolt may be cracked. Inspect, decide which problem exists, and replace the defective part.

A minor leak may be tolerated, provided you check the lubricant level periodically and replenish as required.
