a/c blows hot!

alright, i know about a/c systems...i just dont know how to diagnosis them. this is where i hope you can help me. haha....

so, last year, my A/C would sometimes blow hot, sometimes blow cold. but if i put the defroster on it would always blow cold. this year so far its always blowing hot air. havnt tryed the defroster method yet (its only been warm enough for a/c for 2 days...). i read some threads talking about compressor failure...but assuming my defrost still blows cold, it cant be the compressor..cause theres only one, right? does my system just need to be recharged? also, where is the A/C system service port? ill see if putting more freon in helps.

thanks for the help guys

edit: just went outside and tested the a/c again. after a few minutes A/C blew decently cold, but not that cold. when i switched to the defrost, it got a little bit colder. recharge? also, this was with AMB temp @ 75 F with the A/C blowing at 65 F. a day like yesterday, when it was 85..the a/c felt much hotter.

I think a simple recharge will do you good. Its not that uncommon on cars this old.

awesome...anyone know the location of the service valve where the 134 goes? or at least the color of the cap?

edit: oh wait, nevermind. high and low side...which side is best to put it into?

nevermind...googles my friend. only low side. actually, heres a good how to for recharging A/C:

The high side service port is between the compressor and the condenser and the low side service port is between the evaporator and compressor, should be easily visible on the left side of the engine bay. You should probably have someone with a reclaiming machine service your system, this is mainly because you need to vacuum all the moisture (refridgerant + H20 = hydrochloric acid) and contaminants out of the system before you recharge it with R-134 and fresh PAG or Ester Oil. The latter is almost impossible without the proper equipment. It is a poor choice to release refridgerant into the open atmosphere as you would if you were to top off a leaking system. Be advised to the legalities of topping off A/C systems in your state's legislature. You're better off paying $100-150 to get it done right. Good luck!

P.S. - You might also be experiencing side effects of a malfunctioning thermostat, could be stuck open, invest in a new one its cheap, see if that helps.

yea i was having a brain fart when i asked where the service valves were. i thought about it for a minute and realized i was dumb. haha....as for the machine thing...my school had a machine...im thinking i might try to talk to one of my old teachers because ill be in RI next week. maybe they can do it for me. otherwise, whatever. i dont plan on having the car after the summer. so ill just go buy some 134 and oil and put it in.
