Am i getting RIPPED OFF??????

Ok guys heres the story. So i noticed my exhaust had a hole near the muffler so i decided to take it to a shop to have it patched. Turns out most of my piping was hung improperly and was pretty badly rusted. Now the fun begins, i ask the guy what should i replace and surprise, surprise, he goes everything from the y-pipe down to the muffler. I ask him will you put a high flow cat, he laughs and says there is no such thing, only different inlet and outlet sizes. Then he tells me that having a 2.5inch piping for the car doesn't help and i may as well just make it 2.25inch.

The price he wants, $160 for the piping and $170 for the cat, and $100 for the muffler. My question, am i getting ripped off or should i buy a whole system off the interenet????????? AND should i go with 2.25inch piping of 2.5inch piping??????

Sounds like a rip to me... I'd definitly go aftermarket. From what I hear from the forum... piping DOES matter...

Id' get aftermarket if you're not staying stock.

Anything would be better than the stock piping. There's that terrible pinch of half the pipe diameter immediately following the resonator.

Sounds like hes trying to sell you away from what you want depending on what he has in stock, and has no clue about Maxima performance. Where did you take it, there is a guy on w131 st, Affordable Muffler on Lorain.

I dont know if he does custom jobs, dealt with him once and can tell hes honest.

Then theres Bubbas Mufflers on the eastside by Bedford auto mile, he has performance mufflers and seems honest.

they say they are high flow but it doesn't do much difference. High flow cats for our cars are 2.5 i/o and so is the stock cat. There has been no proven power gain from "high flow" cats. Until someone posts a before and after dyno I won't believe it.

Either way, the exhaust question, get aftermarket exhaust. Don't have them do piping, it's a waste. 2.5" is fine. Most aftermarket systems for the max are 2.5 unless you want 3". You seem to be looking for the catback only? Not sure but if you are get a system on here. You can find good stuff for cheaper.

I went to mufflers for less at pearl and brookpark. I've heard good things about them but i dont know about all the stuff they told me, seems overpriced.

Yeah I know of one person who whent there, he just said they were cheap, that guy drives a Honda with no clue about performance, so take it for what its worth......I would do what alot of ppl here suggest, buy a good perfomance muffler pref catback here or off the net get a y pipe and have one of these guys install it. Warpspeed has a whole system y pipe-back (inc. catback Magnaflow)for only $590 Im considering myself.

yea definately sounds like a rip-off. w/e system you end up getting, just make sure its full stainless steel. if not, down the line you will run into rust issues and end up having to replace it again. it may cost a bit more for a full stainless cat-back, but in the end it'll be worth it. better quality.

I'm pretty sure Factory piping is 2".. If I were you I'd got 2.25".. unless you want aloud exhaust.. then go 2.5" but get extra resonators and avoid straight thu exhausts.

Not possible. You can't add an aftermarket muffler and expect it to be quiet with a y pipe. Only option for being quiet is stock muffler, a33 muffler, or cattman muffler. Cattman is louder and deep. Big $$$ tho.

i would recommend 2.5" catback (mine is custom, mandrel bent), no cat (if you need it, you would have to buy a high flow one), a bigger resonator (mine is 22" or so), and a super turbo muffler from dynomax 2.5" ( http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku); that combo works great for me and its not too loud, but im upgrading to 3" because now im turbo, but i will stay with dynomax super turbo 3"

The thing to remember is that if he makes it inhouse for you, it will be crimp bends. If you go aftermarket, it will be Mandrel Bent. 2.5" is fine, dont go larger. replace your Y pipe with a Warpspeed or Budget, and personally I'd go with a stock muffler. With an intake, I prefer the sound to it than the muffler anyway. Nice throaty growl when accelerating, but dead silent otherwise. No droning or other issues.

exactly. high flow cats are just a way to get suckers money. like the tornado, or the "30hp gain" $10 chip from ebay. they are not much different from your stock cat. especially on newer cars.
