Could be a water pump as well. If the water pump is weak, the water won't properly circulate through the system. Did you change the radiator cap? The radiator cap holds pressure to raise the boiling point. When you say that it overheats, is it indicating on the temp gauge that it's running hot? Is the coolant boiling over?

Well the first time the water boil over and crack the radiator. the next time I notice the temp guage was running hot. I did not change the cap. I figure it was still good. The only time this happens is when the car is idling.

How many miles do you have on the car?

Make sure that both of the fans are operating properly. They are thermostatically controlled, but they should come on as soon as you turn on the a/c.

I would also check the water pump. Remove the radiator cap (cold) and then run the engine until it gets up to operating temp. Once the thermostat opens up, you should be able to see water circulating in the filler neck.

Sounds as if the fan is not coming on to cool the radiator. When you are driving, the wind coming across the radiator is sufficient to cool the radiator. If the water pump was not working, the car would overheat whether you are standing still or driving.

Troubleshooting

Well I did some trouble shooting on Sat. The water pump works fine. I thought the fan was okay until the temp gauge started going up so I lift up the hood and notice the fan wasnt running. So i think the relay switch is kaput. can someone confimn this?

I don't think we can determine what component in the circuit is bad without being there. You really need to get a volt-ohm meter and test each part. I wouldn't jump to any more conclusions; with 119K miles, it could very well be the fan motor.

When you switch on the A/C does the fan kick on then? If so the temperature sensor controling the fan is bad.
