intake question

i was reading that when you install an aftermarket intake you have to reset the ECU afterwards. 1)do i have to reset the ECU? & 2)why do you have to reset the ECU?

you dont have to reset the ECU. it learns that you have a new intake on its own.

Unless you are changing from MAF to MAP or something else as drastic, why would the ECU even be involved?

You could zip tie the sensor to something that would keep it from flying around your engine bay

what CAI did you get? I was going to get a more generic one, I cant afford $tillen, AEM or K&N. Did you see any difference? About the temp sensor just secure it to something, it is only for diagnosis. if you really want it break out the drill and put it somewhere on your intake.

eBay is fine, just get a different cone filter like K&N. BTW AEM doesn't make an intake for the 4th Gen.

It's fine to drill a hole and fit it on the piping. Thats what I would do. As long as you get piping that goes through the fender wall it doesnt matter what brand the CAI. Stillen doesn't make a CAI for our car, either does k&n really (its ebay version), and AEM doesn't either. Ebay and Place Racing are the only two true CAI. Get ebay piping and a k&n filter.

K&N doesn't make a filter for the 4th gen maxima, i see some people on here with k&n's, do they just get the universal one?

no its not actually a universal filter but you just need to find any one that attaches to 3" piping or whatever you use. I would personally get a monsterflow filter anyway. I've been told those work great.

I would go with the APEXi filter. Thats what I now have on my Weapon-R short ram intake. I love it, good filter.

Haha alright, I just through out some places that i know make em' didnt really look into if they make any for the 4th gens. Thats pretty cool though, ebay has some decent looking cheap ones. Is there a noticeable gain in power? I just like the sound they make

Honestly its not worth the 5-8 HP gain with the short ram intake. I do not notice any more power. Even with the 10-12 claimed HP gain with a CAI, its not worth it. It will not make a noticeable difference unless you have a full exhaust or turbo/supercharged engine. For the sound, just go with a short ram rather than a cold air.

i dont know cars vary no 2 maxima's will have the same HP level but in general i would not tell you to get any ooiled filter it cuts the MAF's reading on actual airflow over time i would tell you to go with the AEM dryflow filter not to mention its more efficent than a k&N of similar size and they never have to be oiled. just my .02

How about fuel economy? Does that change at all? I have heard some things about water logging... is this an actual concern?

please do not get into hp or gas mileage talk. It's been covered so many damn times and it just starts battles. not sure where you guys saw 8-10 or 10-12 hp on intakes but thats not true. Intakes add minimal power and are the same because they add and subtract hp. CAI adds low takes high, HAI adds high takes low. CAI is the only thought in my head with intakes and it's not the same with everyone. I totally disagree with the other guy cause you get more sound from a CAI but whatever. Add what you want and do what you want.

Nothing against anyone but I said that they claim to get 10-12...even though there is usually no noticeable increase. I did mine because i got a deal I could not refuse. Gas mileage may go from 20.5 to 20.3 but no major increases/decreases. They do not add much power to a N/A car. Do what you want...its your car.

Not another one of these.

Optimize your intake set-up and you WILL see gains.

Oh god... haha didnt mean to start a war on a thread thats not even mine . I know that ive ridden in a few cars with a CAI, and they do sound pretty sweet so odds are I will just do it for that, if I see any gains... awesome, if i see any losses, ill return it. I cant imagine if you optimize the amount of air that is forced down the throat of your car it will be better. I was reading a import mag and they dynoed an evo stock and with a few cheap performance mods, they first replaced the stock air filter with a higher flow filter (same stock box) and they saw 8-10hp gains. Worth a shot i guess.

And we've all read dyno's on here and you do not see 8-10 hp gain. Trust us. You won't really notice gains or losses anyways. Get a CAI, optimize the intake and you'll be happy. It takes more than just slapping on the pipes and filter to get good gains from an intake.

that was on an EVO which already has stock turbo, so you would see some more gains.
I have a weapon R short ram with apex-i filter, and i love the sound it makes. i noticed a little high end gain when i installed it combined with my warpspeed 2.5 Y-Pipe and full exhaust.
