Airbag Light and Ambient Temp
Airbag Light and Ambient Temp
My airbag light has been coming on a lot lately but I've noticed it seems to correlate with the ambient temperature. It likes to come on when the weather is hot out. Just today I was driving and it started flashing again. Later on tonight as it got cooler the light disappeared without me having to reset the light. I also noticed it won't like to reset itself in warm weather either.
Anyone know what is triggering this to be sensitive to temperature? The flashes I'm getting for the light is 0202.

Seeing you have a 98 with leather, I would first check under the passenger and driver seats to see if anything is under there that could be tripping the light as the side airbags are very sensitive.
Assuming that there is nothing under them, you could have a sensor shorting out due to heat. There is a way to pull the code to see which airbag it is....I remember it was brought up a few months ago...and I see you have the search function. It was in the 4th gen forum...about 2 months ago and 2 da mizzax gave a good writeup on how to pull the code from the airbag light to pinpoint which airbag is giving you trouble. Hope this helps...

99BlackMaxMS,
Yep I've definitely done the searches and have come across 2damixx's replies. Like I mentioned I got the 0202 code I thought it was the passenger but it's actually the driver's side. Anyways, there's no junk or anything under my seats and I don't adjust my seat either so odd that a wire could be pinched. I've read that it's an expensive part to replace which I would like to avoid. Come to think of it, it does also come on after a hard turn..

Unfortunately the only way to fix your problem is by taking out the airbag and module and examining it for a short, or lubing up and bringing it into the dealer. You said 0202 means driver side airbag...and in all honesty, if the light does not bother you and you do not feel like paying $350 for a new sensor, then ignore it. It is nice to have side airbags, but IMO its not worth the $$.
dude u got side air bags? i get that when it colds. because my battery voltage drops below spec during cranking for the airbags. Also the side air bags on our 98-99 has a overlay harness out because something about them are bad. they will tell you to replace the module and all the sensors due to wear. But just try and reset the light with the door jam trick. And maybe get the code pulled at the dealer cause its the only place. if its something other then side air bags then worry about it.
Hahaha speak of the fcuken devil.....my friggin light came on right after I posted in this damn thread. I will try resetting the light, but can you please post how to pull the code for the airbag so that i can verify which one it is? Thanks!
Turn car to ON
Press the driver's side door switch at least 5 times quickly within 7 seconds
The SRS light should no longer be a steady blink
Count the fast and slow flashes...

0202 for me too....I am left stuck now as I reset the light last night....stayed off all night (drove to and from dinner and out to friends), then went on again after roastin in the sun all morning. It is prob the most annoying light, especially when driving at night.
To reset the light, you just follow the directions above doing it 7 times in 10 seconds, right? Also, when the light is on, do all airbags function except the one triggering the light? Sorry to threadjack at all, just trying help you out.

This just happened to me for the first time in 3 years of owning my Max. I was driving in the country and it was mid-eighties and sunny. I went over a huge dip in the road that literally bounced my @$$ off the seat and a few minutes later I noticed the airbag light was flashing. At first I thought my alternator might be going bad again--that was the only other time the light has come on.
I have a loaded 99 with side airbags. I read a few of the threads and also checked the 99 FSM for diagnostic procedures. There is a long list of flash patterns but mine just did the 2 secs off, 3 secs on, repeat. This means "Intermittent problem has been detected in the past." Before I did this I checked under the seats and I had a mini phone book under the passenger seat. When I hit that huge dip in the road it flew up and probably loosened the connection momentarily, which is what triggered the light.
After I did the diagnostics I put the key to ON again and this time the air bag light went off as normal. By the way, you do NOT need to turn on the car at any point during the procedure (some people have said you need to). Ignition just has to be in ON.
Hopefully this solved the problem, and I'll keep the area under the seats clear from now on. If my light comes on again I'll post back.

I fixed my problem about 10 days ago....after not giving into the dealership $97.20 initiation fee...I went and looked under the drivers and passengers seats. I never kept anything under them because I had heard of the airbag light troubles. When vacumning my car last, I must have knocked one of the harnesses loose on the passenger side, because it was hanging down.
I couldn't figure out how to get it to clip back on, so I uncliped the drivers side and figured it out. Put everything back together on the pass. side and reset on the first try. Has been gone for a good 10 days or so.
I actually have a broken tab that allowed the harness to break free from where the main wiring harness is. It is a metal tab that is welded to the seat with two holes in it. There is one bunch of wires coming from the left, middle, and right, all connecting right there. The connector on the left had 1/2 of the plastic broken off so I simply snapped it back on (temp. fix till I can go order the piece from the dealer) and it was gone on my first try. I guess I saved myself several hundred dollars...because I am sure the dealership was not going to let me leave telling me that a $0.50 clip was broken.......
