Basic troublespots?

Hey guys, been a forum member with my 92' max for a while, now I'm looking at getting a newer max (1995). What problems should i be looking for in regards to rust, or the basic issues that all these 4th gen's have?

Thanks for the help guys

Honestly, no offence, nothing against u, but a "newer" is not 95. if u plan on moving from 92 to 95 i would say dont. just stay with what u have until u get more money for something 2000+.

but in the mean time i will still participate in this thread.

i would advise on getting a 97-99 4th gen over the 95-96 4th gen. several reasons: more problems were worked out with later years, better looking front and back.

Lol, I'd take a 4th gen over a 2000+ any day...... And a 4th gen is deffinitly a step up from a '92

No real problems for rust/rot like the third gen's seatbelt or anything like that, except for the lower radiator core support (underneath front of car where engine crossmember bolts). As to what to look for for general problems, there are a million threads on this topic......

alrighty then, first i would check if the lower rad support is still there and not completely rotted away. check the rear brakes as the calipers are known to lock up in the back, check the hand brake cable near the rear wheels under the car, it was designed incorrectly and when a mech lifts the car the cable MAY get pinched. check for leaks, the oil pressur switch and the rear main seal are known to leak. check if the check engine light is on and get that doagnosed before u buy the car, may be something that costs more to fix then the car itself is worth.

looking for auto or 5spd ? stick maxes have more tranny problems then auto maxes.

electrically, i cant think of anything. only the knock sensor, but pretty much every maxima (4th gen) that ever existed had to get its KS replaced.

there was an alternator recall on the VQ30DE from 97-98 but that should not apply to a 95

and pretty much what consumer guide reported here :
Automatic transmission: The original automatic-transmission (model F04) shift solenoids allowed slipping and premature wear. (1997)
Brake noise: Rear brakes rattle on rough road. (1995)
Brake noise: Groaning from the rear brakes is caused by the parking brakes not fully releasing, requiring new brake cables and pads. (1995-99)
Brake noise: Groaning from rear brakes at slow speeds may be due to binding parking brake cable. 1995-99)
Clutch: The clutch may slip when accelerating hard in 4th or 5th gear due to a problem with the friction material. (1995)
Engine knock: Spark knock or ping may result from a defective onboard computer. (1995-97)
Engine noise: Noise from the front of the engine may be caused by excessive play in the timing chain for which a new tensioner and chain guide are required. (1995-96)
Hard starting: Hard starting, stalling, or stumbling under load could be caused by corrosion of the coolant sensor. (1995-96)
Hard starting: If the engine does not start on the first attempt, the engine may crank very slowly on the second attempt because of a problem with the engine-control computer. (1995)
Rough idle: Several problems (no-start, no A/C, rough running, etc.) can be traced to broken wires in the engine compartment where the harness bends near the right strut tower. (1995-97)
Rough idle: Rough running engine accompanied by check engine light may require revised powertrain control module. (1997)

as u can see from consumer's guide, most of these problems were eliminated by 98-99 models
