Air Conditioner stuck on

Air Conditioner stuck on
On my 96 Max, my A/C is always on even with the A/C switch off and the blower in the off position. The air coming in is cold even on a hot day so I know my A/C compressor is still engaged. After I've driven about 20 minutes or so, it turns off and the air blows warm, but then it comes back on again every few minutes and cold air starts blowing again even with all the controls in the 'off' position. Does someone know whether the likely culprit would be the switch behind the dashboard, a relay in the fusebox or possibly a solenoid on the A/C compressor itself that's become stuck somehow?
Thanks,
Van

Yes, I have verified it is engaged. The wierd thing is, on the way home today it was stuck on for about 5 minutes, and then it started working properly and I was able to disengage the clutch using the a/c switch. Tomorrow, though as always, it will be engaged again on my drive to work even with the switch off and I will be unable to turn it off. It probably isn't the switch since it works part of the time. Perhaps some kind of solenoid is sticking on the A/c compressor itself when the unit is cold.
