Just got the engine code PO420 I was told I have to replace the canister and close valve.Does that mean it is stuck close? Is this something I can do myself ( I change my oil, did plugs and brakes) so thats about all of done thanks to this site. The dealership wanted 565.00 for the 2 parts with labor seems high. Thank you for any help IS this a MUST fix or can it wait

Correct me if I am wrong but isnt 0420 is a cat/ 02 code?

just got back from dealership. code po420 and p1167. told $1450 to replace cat and o2 sensor. car rattles and they said cat breaking up could suck back into engine and destroy it. Check engine light is on and runs rough at 5000 Rpm s +. This ia an 2002 . Should I replace or look for another solution?

 

ok, first off, you're in the wrong section, 2000-2003 has its own section, second....i'll change ur cat and your o2 sensor for half that price....

 

The 0420 code is a PITA and I had a hell of a time trying to figure out what it was when I had it as it was an intermittent code. It ended up being one of my downstream 02 sensors on its way out, not the cat. You can find an 02 sensor on www.oxygensensors.com for under $60 dollars and do it yourself easily.

 

dont replace cat.its rear that cat really goes bad.and yeah cats cost an arm,leg maybe your nuts too.

Do not pay anyone more the $50 to do an O2 sensor, especially for a sensor that has absolutely nothing to do with how your car operates or emits pollution
