Engine stalling
Hello,
I had a strange problem today in my '98 5 speed:
After parking it in the big concrete parking lot at work
after lunch (as always) for 4 hours I restarted it. It
sounded a little funny, as it revved upto 1500 then fell
down to 500 within a couple of seconds, plunged to 250-300
and then the engine stalled a couple of seconds later. I
restarted it, revs started going down within 2 secs., but I
jabbed the pedal and it seemed OK after that. That is OK
until the first stop sign. Upon putting it in neutral it
went down to 400 (instead of the usual 600). After that
I've restarted it twice and it started OK, but the problem
of falling to 400 RPM at stop signs has recurred 2-3
times. I've been putting Chevron 93 octane from the same gas
station for many months and the fuel tank has already done
200 miles (a little below half now) on this last fill up 5
days ago. Any ideas? Anything that can reduce the chance of
dealer taking me for a ride would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Sameer

"Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) -- Auxiliary Air Control (AAC) Valve
This system automatically controls engine idle speed to a specified level.
Idle speed is controlled through fine adjustment of the amount of air which
by-passes the throttle valve via the IACV-AAC valve. The IACV-AAC valve
changes the opening of the air by-pass passage to control the amount of
auxiliary air. ... "
You may make a quick test of your IACV-AAC in the following way. With the
motor at normal operating temperature, and at idle, switch the A/C from
"off" to "maximum". Keep your eye on the tachometer as you do this. The
idle speed should dip momentarily and then recover. If it does this, the
IACV-AAC is working. If the idle drops and does not recover, the engine
may stumble, falter, and stall. The IACV-AAC may require cleaning,
adjustment, or replacement.
The correct idle speed is...
- 700 +/- 50 (automatic transmission, in Neutral)
- 625 +/- 50 (5-speed)
There are other engine parts which play a role in maintaining the right idle
speed, but the IACV-AAC is the first thing to look at. Good luck!
