DIY: 4th Gen Vehicle Speed Sensor
DIY: 4th Gen Vehicle Speed Sensor
Ok so my speedo goes dead all of the sudden and I'm like WTF?? I plug in my scanner and I get P0500 ( Vehicle Speed Sensor ). Both speedo and ODO were not working.
Here is what was wrong with it.

Damn rats bite the VSS harness. This is what you get when you live in the GHETTO FTL. Brooklyn FTW LOLzzz
Ok lets start this short write up. This job should take you, 30 minutes maximum.
1. If you get code P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor, make sure there is nothing wrong with the harness. The VSS is located on top of the transmission looking from the drivers side front fender.
Here's a picture.

2. If there is nothing wrong with the harness, all you have to do is remove the 10mm bolt which is securing the VSS down to the tranny.
Here's a picture.

3. After you remove the bolt, pull on the VSS upward. It should be a little tight to remove since there is an O-ring to prevent the transmission fluid from escaping the tranny housing. A flat head screw driver may come in handy in this situation to try to move up the VSS from the housing.
4. Now that the VSS is removed from the tranny, remove the VSS harness connection.
Here's a picture.

5. You're almost done. All you have to do is replace the VSS with a new one.
6. Connect the VSS harness and then connect the VSS back into the tranny housing. Make sure you twist the VSS while inserting into tranny so the teeth could grab.
7. Replace the 10mm bolt and take the car for a short drive to make sure your speedo works.
Here is what was wrong with it.

I just did the same to my dads 96. I replaced the sensor a few weeks back with one from my parts car and the code came back. Desperate for a sticker my dad bought a new sensor at the dealer for about $30. His wire had some insulation missing too.
