I just had a Warpspeed Y-pipe installed a week ago. There is a rattle at exactly 2200 rpms when the engine is under load. Other than that, there are no rattles in the exhaust. The shop that installed the pipe claims it's the Y-pipe making the noise. Has anybody else experienced this (or is this the "bees-in-the-can" noise)?
Also, right after the pipe was put on I get a hiss above 4k when going WOT. They claim there is a hole in the muffler, but the hiss was not there before. Could it be the extra flow of the Y-pipe finished off muffler (I admit the muffler is rusting)?

Hmm, I'll have to check that out for the rattle noise. Originally Posted by BlackCat

As for the air leak, the muffler defintely has a hole; I'd estimate it's about the size of a penny. I think I'll be buying a 5th gen muffler to replace it.

My car has that problem right now. I'm just speculating but I think it needs to be re-welded. I might get a new Y-Pipe (any group deals?)Originally Posted by BlackCat

Fixing that is on my to-do list as soon as I replace my CV Axles (which should be sometime this week)

I installed a WSP y-pipe for my 5sp VG about 2 weeks ago and I noticed a loud "metal on metal" rattling around 1800-2000 rpm under heavy load as well. After much investigation, I found out it was the heat sheild underneath my Cat. I took off one bolt and cracked the head clean off and that was enough to cause a rattle. I used bailing wire and wedge some muffler putty (autozone) in between the cat and the shield and now rattle is gone. Also my Y pipe directly touches my shifter linkage and that causes no problems. After 4000rpm I also get a sputtering sound as if there is a hole some where. I believe it is from where the y-pipe connects to the headers because by design, one of the bolts (rear right) is almost impossible to tighten because the pipe itself blocks your reach. HOpe that helps...
I went to Advance auto and got some muffler mender for 3 bucks. I put some between the head shield and the cat and the exhaust has not rattled since. Thanks Spacend!
I also put some on the hole in the muffler, but that didn't do anything for that hissing sound. I'll probably still end up getting a 5th gen muffler just because mine is rusting so bad. I guess I'll have to live with the hissing sound.

i have a full stillen exhaust (y/b/cb) and i get the "bees in a can" affect. Right now it is more noticeable bc i have a test pipe in and i know that has a little pebble or something stuck in it, but when i put my random tech cat on its still there a bit. Im assuming its the y but i cant figure it out anyone else have this prob? oh yeah, its absent under 2500 then from 25-3000 its there under normal load and with heavy load its there consistantly.
As far as I know the stillen y will give you a pretty bad "bees in the can" sound.
I have heard you can put exhaust wrap around the flex section of the y-pipe to help with the bees sound. Also, check for any points of contact where the exhaust could be rattling against heat shields, etc.

i just put on a budget y and i get a rattle too. after reading this thread im pretty sure its the cat hitting the heat shield too like the others. im gonna buy that stuff to go around it to help it out.
Do you get any kind of hissing noise from your y-pipe? If you installed it yourself, did you have a hard time getting any of the bolts tightened?

No, i dont get any hissing. i installed it myself and all the bolts were very easily accessible for me with a socket extension. everythings tightOriginally Posted by pscmj84

Hmm, good to know. Hopefully my hissing will go away with a new muffler.

Dubbya and I installed mine. A good socket extension helped with the tightening bolt issue. Ill have to look into that heat shield thing. It gets annoying. It only happens under load going slow starting out for me then its gone. I have the WSP y too. Thanks for the input on this, I thought the bracket itself was the issue.
