My stock muffler has rusted through and needs to be replaced. I have a Warpspeed y-pipe, so I want to make sure that whatever muffler I end up with will flow better than a run of the mill oem replacement muffler. The thing is, I want the muffler to be as close to stock noise levels as possible.

I have heard that the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler is pretty much the quietest aftermarket muffler available for the 4th gen Maxima. I have also heard good things about the 5th gen variable flow mufflers.

I can get a Dynomax muffler locally for about $50, or most 5th gen muffler deals I am trying to work out have been $50 + shipping. There is also the possibility that one of the muffler shops around here carries dynomax mufflers and that they'd be able to cut me a deal on install costs if I bought from them. Problem is, I'm afraid even the quiet Dynomax muffler might be louder than what I'd want. Unfortunately, I haven't really found any good sound clips associated with the muffler that aren't mixed with loud intakes, etc.

I like the idea of a 5th gen muffler, but I'm worried that their might be fitment issues or that it might look funny with the circular 4th gen bumper cutout. I do like the idea of having a 5th muffler on there just because I think it is more original than just throwing a universal aftermarket muffler on there.

So, give me your opinions and vote in the poll!

Not all the 5th gen's are variable IIRC, actually I thought it was only AE & 5.5 gens, don't quote me on that though. I voted for 5th gen

They are all variable. Nissan advertised it back in 00.


Dynomax looks better. 5th gen is quieter. Dynomax is QUIET if you have the stock bpipe and has a very nice tone(the 17748 not the shorter one)

So would you say that Dynomax muffler #17748 is the quietest of the Super Turbo mufflers (or all aftermarket performance mufflers for that matter)? I guess that would make sense that a longer muffler will be quieter.

I think the shorter muffler is #17733, right (14 vs. 20 in shell length)? I don't even see how someone would use the shorter one considering the oem length is about 20 inches.

I think at this point I'm starting to lean torwards the Dynomax for cost and ease of install. I'll have to see what muffler tips are out there (I'd assume the stock tip is rusted on there pretty well and pretty much not reusable).

I have an aftermarket Y-pipe and B-pipe and the dynomax is still very quiet. I'm very particular about my exhaust being too loud and let me tell you, the dynomax super turbo is the quietest performance muffler you're gonna get. Any quieter and you won't be able to hear it at all.

Is the Cattman muffler for the 4th gen pretty quiet, I've had Dynomax on some high HP V8 cars, pretty quiet, well quieter than Super 40's!

Any sound clips of the dyno max? Let me tell ya, I had a 5th gen muffler on my 2nd gen max and it increased highway performance and it was noticeable by a lot. Ive heard a dynomax muffler before coupled with a y-pipe in person and it was nice. The tone was perfect too. Like ewuzh said any quieter and itd be pretty much quiet like stock.

Looks the polls are pretty close right now. I decided on the Super Turbo muffler for ease of install. I special ordered it from Advance auto for $49 in order to save paying for shipping from online sites like cardomain or jegs.

Is it possible to just reuse the stock muffler tip on the Dynomax muffler? I actually like the look of the stock muffler tip.

I like the look of that tip, but it's too big for my style (maybe an inch smaller diameter would be good). It also doesn't look like there is much clearance between the tip and the bumper, have you ever had any problems with that?

I bought the 144747 because it was readily available & also because I have the stock b-pipe (2.25" diameter) vs the 2.5" for the 144748. They are identical apart from this. I have a Budget y-pipe & the sound is nice & quiet with a slight rumble at idle. Here's a pic of the oval tip I got, I was surprised that it looked this good compared to the other tips the exhaust shop carried.

Hmm, I have the stock B-pipe and I ordered the 144748.

So, hopefully it won't be a problem for the exhaust shop that the b-pipe is 2.25" in diameter vs. the 2.5" for the Dynomax muffler

Not the same muffler exactly but I have a Dynomax Ultra-flo welded muffler and a Dynomax Bullet resonator and I am thoroughly happy with it's quality and sound.

I had both at one time. 5th gen definitely quieter and performs well IMO. I think it looks good as long as u get 5th gen muffler with the tip.

I think my ideal sound would be almost as quiet as stock during normal driving and then a bit more throaty / aggressive sound at or near WOT. I think what I really want to avoid is booming in the cabin and being easily picked out of group of cars as having the aftermarket exhaust.

I bought the tip today off Ebay for the Dynomax muffler, once the tip gets here I'll go and get the muffler on and see how it sounds.

I think you've already have your answer before you posted. Your just getting the muffler which is mostly noise, both muffler are chambered but the 5th gen would be more restrictive.

I have the dynomax super turbo and the results are as good as you can get a muffler to function. In torque and in HP.
Do it, buy it, enjoy it.

I just picked up my muffler from Advance Auto yesterday. The box was beat up, but the muffler itself looks okay.

The stock tip will not fit on the 2.5" output from the muffler.. You will need a tip with a 2.5" inch inlet diameter. You don't want to get a super long tip since you probably don't want it sticking out any further than stock (stock tip is about 5" long).

I ordered a tip that is about 8" long, so hopefully the muffler shop can arrange the muffler and tip so that the tip won't stick out past the bumper any more than stock. Here is what I got:

This tip has a 2.5" inlet diameter and a 3" outlet diameter and is 8 inches long. You could also go with the magnaflow tip mentioned above by Kevlo911 (2.5" in, 4" out, 5" length) if you don't mind the 4 inch diameter output. You also wouldn't have to worry about length with the Magnaflow tip.

Anyways, once the tip comes in I'll get the muffler installed and see how it goes.

I would like for the tip to match up even with the bumper which i think is a little longer than stock. Should i probably get the 8" for that?

The Dynomax doesn't have any of the hangers welded onto it. The one I got didn't anyway. I returned it and got an OEM 4th gen muffler instead.

Yes it would...but that's an added cost...and I didn't want to do that. I'd go with the 5th gen.

Alright so I just looked on Autozone's website and they dont have Dynomax on there so i wonder what i ordered retards. Then i got on Advance Auto's website and they didnt have it either. So how did u get it at Advance?

I went to the store and saw they had Dynomax mufflers in-store. I gave them (the employees) the exact number for the Dynomax muffler. When they order it, it will come up as "Walker Super Turbo". When it comes though, it will be Dynomax. They will get it from another store or their distribution center (without charging you shipping or anything). You come pick it up from their store when it gets there.

I wish the muffler was on their website (Advance Auto), but it's not.

Depends, what the description for the part say? It should say something about being a muffler or "super turbo" or have the name Dynomax or Walker in it.

Personally, I would go with the dynomax. First of all, you probably won't get any kind of noticeable gains with either, and the dynomax isn't unbearably loud. So save some money and get the dynomax.
