Problem With 1997 Maxima

Hello guys im very new to nissan products so bare with me.

I just bought a 1997 maxima GLE auto.

and i have a problem:

Every once and awhile the car will just die..(

did it to me 4 times today)

(yesterday never did it.)

The rpm guage will jump then sputter and die. The car has full battery power and will start right up but may die again or the rpm guage with bouce around like 200-1500 then 2200-200 something like that..after its done acting up usually less then 10 seconds it runs fine.

I get no check engine light. Any help? does our cars not like heat? it was 28c today. Im in canada if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance.

check ur air filter? clean ur MAF sensor and possibly IACV. Did u change ur fuel filter last tune up?
edit: check 4 codes anyways

sorry to jack the post in a way. but i also have a 97 max se. i just put headers on it and y-pipe and gutted the cat and a stage one clutch and also replaced the rear main seal. after this install it has very long crank time before starting. and accelleration is better but it kind of has a rough accelleration. any clues as to what this problem might be? mass air flow possibly? i jsut put coils and plugs on it. the dtc's were rear O2 and cylinder #3 missing. but what would cause a long crank time? thanks!

Locate your air filter box. Just upstream from it is another tube with a small black box on it, with a plug coming out of it. That's your MAF sensor.

Sounds like IACV or throttle body. Check here and here for good info and pics.

2blue- do what EnervinE said, and never go by what the prev owner says, lets face it not everyone who owns a max is as obsessed as we orgers are, so assume it wasn't well maintained.

ucmax30- since u recently dropped ur tranny make sure your ground is on tight, or add ground to ur starter and other points (do a free search on ground kit) this may help with long cranks, as for ur idle- iacv and maf, check post 7^^^. For the misfire in cyl 3, make sure ur coil pack is functional or plug properly gapped, connector, etc. Which cat did you gut? main one to which rear O2 sens is connected to? < this may affect O2 reading.

I would also suggest a fuel pressure regulator. I had a lot of crazy random similar problems with mine because of that.

maintenance is common issue for this problem. If you r lookin for a sensor to blame, i remember camshaft or crankshaft sensor giving me issue in this area (the sensor that sits on the left side of the engine near where the stillen supercharger bolts on)
