In case you were wondering, the outside of the crank pulley is not supposed to be removable by hand. Unfortunately the one on my beater maxima is... lol

Ha, that reminds me of an experience with a Lexus GS300...nearly made me (and the entire shop) **** ourselves.
I had replaced a belt tensioner on it, then a friend of mine replaced the AC compressor, and when he brought it back in after a test drive it was squeaking or making some sort of noise by the belts. My teacher is sitting in the car revving it up, low and high, trying to reproduce the noise, and we're all standing in front of it staring down into the engine bay looking for...whatever, like we can visually see a noise.
Anyway, standing there looking into the engine bay, next thing we hear is my teacher taching it out for no apparent reason, a shattering sound, and all of us ducking for cover. Turns out the rubber ring between the crank pulley and the harmonic balancer had disintegrated, so it came flying off of the pulley, hit the clutch fan, shattering every single blade of it into a thousand pieces, after which the balancer made a fair sized dent into the radiator.
Imagine the surprise of 15 students staring right at a disintegrating clutch fan at ~6k RPM. We found pieces of that fan around the shop for the next 6 months, and it's still missing a few pieces (kept it as a 'trophy' of sorts).
Anyway, back on topic, I've read a story or two on here where the crank pulley had seperated and gone flying off (along with the belts) on the interstate. Is that how you discovered this one, or were you lucky enough to not be driving it at the time?

I was in Chicago and near my buddy's place I started hearing a sound like a plastic back was stuck under my car flapping in the wind. I checked it out when I got to my buddy's place and lo - the accessory belt was shredding. I figured it was just because it was really old and weathered. So I replaced it and drove it back home and drove it all this week.
Today I was driving to the bank and started hearing another strange noise so I slowed down and then all of a sudden the noise went away, my charging system and brake light came on so I immediately knew the new belt had come off, my first instinct was that I didn't tighten the tensioner correctly though. So I pulled over to check and as I did I started hearing a new noise, a squeaking noise.
I popped the hood and my brand new accessory belt is nowhere to be found. I was only 2 miles from home so I drove back home and tried to pinpoint the squeaking noise. Turns out it was the outer portion of the crank pulley rubbing against the power steering belt. "How the hell is the crank pulley rubbing on the PS belt?" I wondered.
So my first thought was that my crank pulley had somehow shifted, and sure enough, the outer portion of it would move if I pressed or pulled on it. So I figured the rubber had separated from the outer portion, and I yanked it off and took the pic.
I lost the tensioner off of my turbo car last summer so the tensioner was my first thought when I started hearing the noise on the way out of my neighborhood today.

LOL, my buddies car had the same problem, at least we had a parts car so no big deal. By the way, does your car have over 120k miles, his car just hit 120k when this happened on his 98 max.

What would cause it to break? Seems so unpredictable.
