Why do you need to 'do your timing chain'?

cause my car has 190k on it i dont know how much miles is that and its a 1995. when i just start the car i hear kinda of a clicking noise or metal brushing against metal kinda noise. and it has never got the timing chain adjusted before either so i thought well maybe time for new timing chain.

It would be useless because for one, I doubt there's room in the timing cover, and two, no one makes double row sprockets for the VQ.

Unless it's failed or stretched somehow, no need for replacement, really. Replace the tensioner and guide with the updated TSB part numbers, that should eliminate the timing chain rattle you get on cold starts.

FSM doesn't even give length, just says look for wear or cracking and replace if necessary. I don't think anyone here has ever stretched a chain, and even it if had managed to stretch somehow the tensioner would keep it tight.

Have fun, it's a *****. More so just tedious work because everything has to come off (for the new tensioner and guide) and it's a small space to work in.

Motor mount, AC, alternator, PS, crank pulley, all 15000 10mm bolts...yea.

Ah, right totally forgot about that. At least it's only the lower pan, if it were the upper I would've said **** it. I'd just plan the work right around time for an oil change.

Yes, if you buy a brand new chain and hang it from a nail alongside one with 200k that had been overheated an assload of times you will see that it does not stretch, at all, period. I did this 2 days ago.

Agree^^ once you see what a pain in the*** it is to change that guide you won't wanna do it again unless you have to. Especialy with motor in the car, atleast change the o rings.

I'm a fan of the permetex grey myself, I've had my timing cover off in the car twice no leaks yet DO NOT SKIP the step in the fsm that tells you to clean out the old gasket material from the bolt holes and tips of the bolts................

I'm going to throw some petrol into the fire and say that vq chains can stretch - my one did.

I brought a car not so long ago with a noisy chain cover. I had been doing some research on it and figured I just needed to change the tensioner. After changing the tensioner the noise was still there. So after alot of swearing I got the timing chain cover off and saw that the top chain guide was broken - 'No problem' I thought and I repaired the top chain guide. The noise still remained . So I opened her all up again and found the guide was broken again - At this point I was pretty pissed off so I went out and brought a whole timing chain set and replaced everything I could get at. When I removed the chain I held it up next to the new one - It had stretched about 10mm which I believe caused it to push into a funny angle and break the chain guide. I think it was also enough for it to skip links as the car seemed to idle a bit funny (like a diesel).

The car has 226K KM (~140K Miles) on it. It looks like the oil has been boiled at some stage also (red marks on the timing chain cover).

Now I could just be the odd one out - but if you do some google searching you will find nissan chains (on KA engines in particular) can stretch.

Thought I might add that the noise was there all the time - not just at startup (to avoid any confusion)

from wat you guys have told me so far i think wat the best thing will be to do is to just get the whole kit and the water pump and do them all at the same time.

cause u never know. the chain might stretch in two three months after i change the tensioner and guide. and then i would have to do all wat i have all over again.
