Hello Guys.
I just got back from the 6th largest Nissan Dealership in the nation (Nissan Dealership in Gwinnett County in Georgia)
According to a chief sales manager (Mike Owens),
the pricing on the Altimas, Sentra SE-r's and Maximas WILL NOT sheer over $300 from the MSRP (meaning discount over $300).
I am sorry guys, but Nissan will NOT cut prices to make it easier to purchase.
ANY Nissan dealership which sells ANY 2002 + Nissan Sentra SE-r, Maxima, or Altima at a discount of $300 or more will receive SEVERE Auditing, and all shipment of those cars will be discontinued to those dealerships.
PERIOD.!!!
Sorry guys, but they WILL be quite pricy.
All this is NOT an assumption. This information comes DIRECTLY from a Representative of Nissan Motors in Japan.
BOOOOO for those (such as I) who dont make 6 digits yet!!!

The price of new Nissans is governed by supply and demand, the same free market force which governs the price of radishes, real estate, and Microsoft stock.
If unsold inventory piles up on dealer lots you will see all sorts of price concessions, financing offers, and rebate deals.

I don't question your information. I do question whether Nissan can make that stick.

Agree.
Also, people nowadays are more educated. They can use internet to check for pricing; there are information where you learn how to negotiate for pricing (i.e $500 above the cost?);
Nissan are coming out with great car, but there are a lot of competitors out there (TL-S vs Altima, RSX vs SE-R...)
Nissan should bring the price lower, attract more Toyota/Honda owners (and come back Nissan owners), and that's how you make profit.

TL-S vs Altima??
Hopefully nissan won't be so stubborn about pricing when the cars come out

Nice try, Nissan.
Certainly coming out with a hot car like Altima, no need to discount much initially, especially since Nissan is trying to fight it's image of a cheap highly discounted car maker. But if sales suffer because of serious underpricing by competitors, they will change their tune. Also, what about end of year in 2002? If 2003's are coming out and 2002's are still there, they will have to cut prices. Also, most people ignorant of VQ power will be comparing these Altimas with Accord and Camry(which is also up for redesign). So pricing better be competitive. American consumers don't like paying msrp. We like our carsdirect and invoice prices.
Also, it might be collusion and against U.S. laws.

I just read in AUtoWeek Magazine that Nissan expects to sell one third LESS Maximas in 2002 than in 2001 -- So if they expect to sell a third less, then they'll probably produce that much less --
I still think they'll have trouble fetching MSRP from most people for the Maxima -- everyone will eye the Altima much more -- since it will get a facelift, it will grow a bit more, and get some nice VQ power, and ditch the dreaded beam axle to go with an independent rear suspension -- And hopefully they'll have the common sense to put a 5 speed transmission with the VQ engine !!
Nissan blows it year after year with the rear beam axle ---
They say it costs too much to make it differently -- but what does it cost to lose sales to Honda and Toyota?
