5th Gen Muffler
#1
i have only an intake, maybe someday putting a Y pipe in, and would like to upgrade my exhaust. i love the sound of the intake, and do not want to make the exhaust too much louder if at all (cuz of the Y pipe). my question is, does the 5th gen make any noticable performance gains over the 4th?? 2nd, anyone know the cheapest online price and location for this?? any other comments, or suggestions?? thanks guys and gals.

RE: 5th Generation Muffler...
As a matter of fact. the 5th generation muffler does have substantial power gains over the 4th generation. Many people replace the 4th gen with the 5th gen because it is quiet, attractive, and effective. I don't know where you can get it, but I would try www.courtesyparts.com were I you. Just trying to help .

Probably not noticable but almost no muffler only would anyway. The Y2k muffler is super quiet and at least it has the technology for hp potential. ie.. dual stage low/high. It will LAST a long time as all Nissan OEM mufflers do(at least maxima ones)
Try posting in the 5-gen or in the parts sections. People are always selling used ones.

FYI
The 5th gen muffler is actually kinda neat and simple on how it keeps performance and remains quiet.....
It has a variable cap within the muffler and it's consistently opening and closing (a little) depending on how hard your accelerating... So that the harder you accelerate the more pressue the cap will feel and the more it will open...
Therefore when your barly touching the pedal the cap is not open that much so it's staying nice and quiet, where as if you have it floored the cap will be wide open which is making a lot of noise, but you can't tell because since your flooring there is already a lot of other noise going on from engine and what not so the noise is being countered....
Never the less its a pretty simple idea, but others who build mufflers seem to not care for it, at least not just yet... Personally I wish greddy would add such components therefore if your driving 20mph the entire block can't hear the rumble of your car, or at least not as much....

Maybe I can help
When I had just the intake and the y-pipe, the intake was dominant in terms of noise produced. I added the b-pipe and 5th gen muffler at the same time and the car got noticable deeper in 1st and 2nd gear, as well as under heavy throttle. The car got deeper sounding, but not louder. I can still drive through a parking structure without resonating the whole structure. So as far as the sound increase goes, I think the y-pipe in conjunction with the b-pipe makes up most of the deep sound.
As far as installation, the hangers fit perfectly. I had to have my 5th gen muffler welded to a flange so I can have a bolt-on-able muffler. I bought my muffler from Maxedout and I think he had a universal muffler installed. The guys cut the old muffler off and welded the new. I pay $20 to have a 2.5" pipe fitted and welded to the muffler and bolted onto the b-pipe. In hindsight, I think I would've just had my stock muffler cut...I don't think I'll be replacing my 5th gen muffler.
