My dad owns a 96 maxima and i own a 95 max, today while changing oil (cars park side by side) i noticed that my my dads car had a boost controller in his car, turned to my car and noticed it wasn't there! Was this a missin part from my car or just the un-necessary p.o.s. factory add on to make cars slow???
how do u know u have a boost controller?
look left of the throttle pipe body (metal part, right above the right back 3rd cylinder). You should see a Closed saucer type device screwed there with few pipes leading somewhere.
if u don't have this, u will see an empty place, where the screws for the device should have been fastened.

umm

I don't know about that.....
but, I believe the 95 is the faster one amongst 4th gens is because it has less emissions restrictions, plus I think it's lighter, compared to 97-99s....

RE: Lightest and fasts...

Don't know anything about the boost controller, but the 95 is the fasted because it had the least emmision equipment and the 95-96 weight less compaged to the 97-99, just like NYCe MaXiMa said. However, you're not really dealing with a lot of speed...nothing 0-60, maybe .1 quartermile, but a little more up top. Just trying to help.

In 96 the maxima went to full OBDII engine compliance. Part of this was installing a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor) to supplement the MAF. That is the thing labeled "Boost Controller. It compartes the manifold pressure to the ambient pressure to compute airflow.

No biggie...

I'm pretty sure that the maxima ECU didn't go OBDII until 97. That's why you can't get an aftermerket ECU for 97+.
That why the Gforce is only for 95and 96 cause they both have OBDI, but I could be wrong? (but I doubt it)

Oh well, I don't pretend to know everything. That's why we post and learn. Hopefully I'll just remember this next time.

95-96 faster than 97-99s

The wheels.

95-96 SEs came with 15 rims standard and 97-99 SEs came with 16" rims standard. The 0-60 times of those cars vary by at most 0.5 seconds.

It's the wheels. Those of you who have 95-96 with new, bigger rims, your cars are slower than stock, right??

I very much feel its the rims because in winter I put 15" thinner 3rd gen wheels on my car to help it handle rain and snow better (it helps ALOT). Boy do I feel a difference in pickup. Cornering is shot but straight line braking and acceleration is much better than on my 17s. My 17s in the iwnter and snow are a freakig nightmare, total skatebaoard.

95 vs others

The big differences weight. The 95 has aluminum bumper
supports in the front and the rear compared to the 97 that have die cast iron ones which are way heavier. I'm about to
swop mine 97 for 95 one. Maxi-miliyon

Are you switching bumpers, or just supports? If you do switch bumpers, make sure you don't run into anything They switched bumpers in 97 because the 95/96s were failing bumper tests miserably. I saw the results of a 5 mph bumper test on a 95 vs a 97...the 95s bumper was completely destroyed, while the 97 didn't have a scratch.

I also think the 95/96s have a different clutch than the 97s and up...I could be wrong, but I drive my friends 96 all the time, and the feel of his clutch is way different than mine (even though he has similar mileage as my 97)
