this weekend on my way to ride and playland i noticed the temp gauge really high! thank i caught it on time before it overheated. i was on the cross bronx in major traffic with the a.c. on when i caught it on time. i immediatly pulled over im thinking i was low on coolant fluid,when i popped open the hood a looked i notice i only had one fan working!! i turned of the a.c. and car started coolind down i then shut the car off. when i looked closer at the non working fan i noticed that the fan blade totaly melted of the motor! wtf!!. im wondering if it was something to do with the auto body shop that just replaced my rotted radiator support? maybe its just a coincidence that they had all these itmes out of the car ie, radiator fan assembly,condensor etc and now one of the fans blades melt off. has anyone had this problem before? how could the fan blade melt off? anyhow im want to swap out the whole assembly being that the other motor is 10 years old and never been changed. how hard is it to replace the whole fan assembly? it looks like only four bolts hold it attached to the radiator and condensor assembly. any thought or experiences?

Replacing the entire fan assembly is so easy.

You could probably just get an entire set including the shroud from a salvage yard or someone, they will bolt right in. You may have to disconnect the upper radiator hose to allow yourself enough clearance to do the exchange. Other than that, very simple.

Agreed, junk yards have it for around $20-40, and its just a couple of bolts and wires to discon/connect for the motors.

Odd though, I drove for 6 months with only one radiator fan working..... never had any chance in temperature....

I have a bad one as well. My high side sometimes comes on, and sometimes it doesnt. Its like the bearing is bad in it. I can just barely touch the blade with a screwdriver, and it will start spinning. weird

yep.... junk yard is your best bet, or probably classified...... ebay has them expensive....

i only had the change in temperature with the A.C. on. other than that its fine. the only problem i have with a junk yard is that those assemblies will be roughly 10 years old as well. but i guess for $20 to $40 i cant go wrong. i checked courtesy nissan, they gave me a quote for $335 shipped for the whole assembly.i guess that isnt a bad price considering just one motor from them is about $160.

is it just four bolts that hold the assembly in place? it looks that way. besides that are the plug ins for the electric motors which is cake.

so i took the adive of you guys and went to a junk yard for the fan assembly. they happen to have one there for a 96 maxima but they are the same for 95 to 99 i believe. anyhow i payed $100 for it the guy wouldnt lower the price on it(didnt hurt to ask) so i just bought it. he gave me a 30 day warranty and said it was tested blah blah blah. so installed it today and what a cake job this is ..did it in 15 min everything works great but now i have a check engine light. didnt pull the code yet i i'll let you guys know what it is later.

But ya, good job on the install, just harass the junk yard owner next time, $100 was a rip off, despite what you needed, you can get a new after market replacement for $60 ish on ebay, of which I have installed in my car right now and its perfect.

i guess i was kind of desperate and thought it wasnt a bad deal. i look at it this way... i still saved $235 compared to getting a new nissan one and i saved money installing it myself. and i really didnt want after market part.if the part will last a year im happy.

so i decoded the ecu light and i got a engine coolant sensor code. isnt this the sensor that turns the fans on and off? our maxes dont have a thermostat and the fans are working fine even when i turn on the a.c. i tried to reset the ecu but the code keeps coming back. could it be that the fan assembly i have is for a 96 and not a 97? Any feed back anyone?

If you dont want an older fan and cowling get a 3.5 unit.

When I replaced my stock radiator with a griffin I also replaced the fans and plastic cowling with the 3.5 5th gen parts. It was a plug and play swap.

I really don't know if the 3.5 fans move more air but I felt it was worth the effort.

did you check the fuse?

the fuse for what? the fans? the fans work fine ,i just have a cel light after the swap.
