want to get new rims, but think its gonna need more than that...
yea i think you are right. ive been polling my coworkers all day. the consensus seems to be 17s. so now im lookin at $913 vs $793. im debating even putting rims on at all right now. i should just buy 54 dollar cheapos and put the rest of my money into the engine.
If you are going 17" I would go 225/45R17. I live in the country and do the rail road tracks thing as well...not to mention some unpaved roads, and I have no worries about doing that size when I get my 17".
my rims
well i haven't posted pics of my maxima yet, and it still needs a little work, i put on infiniti G35 rims- the 6 spoke ones from 2004, and since i was low on money i dropped the car the way we do it here in nyc - I got a mechanic to heat up my springs, i am planning to go with tein basic suspension, but its expensive , so for 50 bucks the guy torches the springs till they compress, the ride isnt that bad at all , it looks sick, and it handles great.
so im seriously considering andrei333s recommendation of just gettin a set of stock 98 5 point alloys. im lookin around the internet, and calling nissan dealers and WTF. the cheapest one i could find on the internet was 175 a piece.....and the dealership? i hope you are sitting down. motherf*cking $410.52. i just laughed at this guy and hung up.
for these prices i might as well buy a whole setup.

Yea if you want to go the cheapest route and still look good, just cop a used set of 97-99 SE wheels. They will look nice even without lowering it. If you get aftermarket wheels, you will just want to lower it after you put the wheels on, so be prepared if that's the route you wish to take.
try posting a wanted ad here http://forums.maxima.org/forumdisplay.php?f=63
did u try craigslist ?
the only way you can get a good price on these is if you wait and wait and wait until someone wants to sell them, i waited about half a year until i found a set that a guy was selling close to my house (didnt want to pay shipping)

yea im on craigslist all day. and here all day. and when im not doing that im on gameday or watching clips at pokertube.com........basically my job entails surfing the internet for about 45 minutes out of each hour until i get an email or the phone rings. then i do "work", then back to this. thats why i have 150 posts in 25 days. THIS IS ALL I DO. AND I GET PAID hahahahaha

No real need to post those pics, lots of members have that setup and have already posted the pics. Im not saying they dont look good because I think they actually do but no need to post the pics unless you just have to show off your ride.
Heating the springs is actually the worst way to lower the car, and the reason you think it rides good and handles well is because you havent ridden on a real suspension setup yet. By heating the springs there is no real way to guarantee they are all even, not too mention the handling is thrown off because of the factory spring rate.

245 40 17s?
the 40 is the biggest turnoff on these. do you think i could run 45s? also its 245 width. would these even fit on my 96 the way they are? what would i need to do to make them fit and make the spedometer accurate. i would buy 4 new tires if i could make these work.

i could go 225 45 17 on the craigslist 225$ wheels?
would 245 be too wide for the wells on a 96?
also what size would i need to NOT affect the spedometer?
(i currently run 205-65-15s)

grab the maxima 17s. they look the best and have the best offset. for a little extra you could have them stripped and powdercoated gunmetal. might wanna jump on em fast now that you let em out.

use this to pick your tire size. wouldn't go wider than 225.
