I want to get a nice subwoofer for my 95 gle and was wondering which brand/model is good and decent. Feedback from "maximans" with subwoofers would be really helpful. Since its going to cost me more than $150bucks (right? around there? alot more perhaps???) I want to hear some reviews from current sub owners and their opinions. Help me get a good sub~ Thanks!

RE: Subs...

I have to agree, if you hear the Eclipses, you will love them. So loud, so clear, so...DAMN is $250 the model or price?!?! Both . However, if you don't want to slash the cash stash, so with JL Audio - they are popular, loud, and affordable. Just trying to help.

Kicker

I started with a 12" Free air, did very well - pretty cheap to buy also. Try the new Comp subs - they are good for cheap. If you want loud as hell and clear go with the solo baric subs. You can put an 8" one in a 0.33 Cubic foot box! That is insanely small! I have 2 Solo 12" L7's in 1.5 cubic foot sealed boxes being pushed by one(for this month anyway, soon to have another)DX700 amp. It hits in the mid 140 db's.

Im not a representative of Kicker, nor do they pay me, but if you put some JL subs next to Kicker subs with the same amp the kicker ones will sound cleaner and hit just as hard. Im not flaming anyone, but go to a sound shop and compair them side by side, you'll be impressed.

Looks like eclipse or JL subwoofers seem like good ones. Eclipse is dang too expensive! Theres one thats around 250-300bucks, other that goes upto 1700bucks! I'm not feeling that. JL seems decent and well priced around 150bucks (W4,5,6s i think). I'll look into JLs for now, unless someone can convinces me to buy another brand I've seen many people buy pair of subs. Would one woofer be good enough? I don't want my truck to all shake and make that distorting noises... Just want a good hard hitting base for me, not neighbors down the street..

oh yea, good amplifier?? Anyone? I'm looking for 300w amps. dont want to pay heck alot though (meaning not over $200s...) thanks guys

Just look into them, you will be impressed. As for an amp, look at sony or Kicker(Kicker under rates their amps - trust me on this, I just went to a kicker employee information secession for local car audio guys). if you get a ZR240 it will have aprox. 320-340 watts. Check the birth certificate if you dont believe me. All Im saying is for you to look into the kicker ones.

got me there. I'll definately look into kickers. zr240s. watts seem good enough for me. Of course, price will be a big factor, but if it comes to like $40 diff between JL or kicker (or something else), i'll go with a quality woofs. heh, woofs.

well, i dont know too much about them, but my friend has 2 12" polk audio subs in a ported box, its got like 6 ports in the front, and his sound good, i have nothing to really compare it too though, not sure how clean it is, but it puts out a Whole lotta bass, and this is with a 1000 watt amp i think, ... now my other friend has- no hAd a 12" audiobahn with a 300 watt amp and it sounded real good, but i only heard it a few times, after that he broke it.. well thats just my opinion, bTW, i have 2 home stereo speakers in my trunk and they have 12's in them.. i unhooked the back speaker and hooked them up, no amp, but it does have alot of bass, inside that is, outside it just sounds like some little kid in there beatin on the trunk lid.. - but i have heard alot of good things about JL ...

If you don't wanna take up space in your trunk, try a JL stealth box with either a W3 or W7. W3 is still dual-voice coil (= hits harder), but doesn't require as much power as W7. If you want a tite setup, go with two Solo-Barics in a push-pull where they hit out of phase with each other. There's my two cents

Just a little FYI:
Sealed box = lower and cleaner
Ported box = louder but distorted bass(also needs to be bigger)
Hope this helps some

I read some articles about sealed and ported subs. Sealed is the one for me. How much would a sealed kicker 300+ watt subs would cost me?

sorry to dissapoint all you kicker fans but if you want the badest sub around you go eclips or digital design. kicker just lacks too much sound quality for my taste

nice but only for spl comp....sound qquality go JL..it all depends on what you listen too...and how you want it to sound..... if you want to be load and don't want to spend a lot of cash

2-jlaudio 12w0's
1-jlaudio 250w amp

not a huge competition winner but you should be able to get them for around 350-400 for subs+amp+box

good luck

ps...........KICKER.........um no thanks....i went up againts 2 kickerl7 12's in a compition and smoked him with 300 less watts buy 4 db.....no thanks on the kicker equip to expensive and not loud enogh

hey man okay so u want some bass

do this go to ebay and get your choice of subs

audiobahn aw1000x(70$) 600watt rms/aw1200x(80$) 700 watt rms
if u want alot of bass with decent sound quality go for em

alum aw10x(120$) 700watt rms/alum aw12x(135$) 800 watt rms
if u want more sound quality then your bass then go with these but they still pack a lot of bass to

and the good thing is they are perfect for small enclosures they require only .7 cubic in...so u can put them in ya spare tire well or u can put them in a hatchback box to save space

with a amp i say go with a rf800@2 or 600@2

Go with JL w3s....man i'm lovin my set up. The bass is clear and fairly loud even though its hook up to my bose head unit( but will soon get a high powered deck so it will be hella louder). The JL subs hit hard and clear i can differentiate between bass notes which is perfect because i listen to electronic dance music. I highly suggest gettin the JL subs; the dual voice coils make it like 2 subs in 1. Oh yeah i got a 500/1 pushing these little buggers..hehehe! Get the W3s i highly suggest it. Plus get a custom box if you really want a perfect sound quality.

RE: Best for your needs...

Seanqlee, sorry I forget to mention it, but DEFINITLY take a look at the Infinity Bass-link. Its a small sub/amp in one that is loud, clear, and easily removable if you need to put other stuff in your trunk. If goes for around $400, and it seems to be just what you're looking for.

$400, little more than I expected. I really didn't want to go over $300-350 with subs and amp. So far, JL seems to be a quality subs with reasonable price. Kicker sounds good to me, except its not loud enough for some maximans.. I guess it is best for me to check these guys out in a local stereo shop. I hear lotta good stuff about JL so far, so i'll look into thems. Thanks again guys

The "Perfect" System

This is my whole system:

Headunit: Pioneer Premier DEH-P730 Reciever (4-volts)

Wiring: 4 Gauge

Capacitor: Rockford Fosgate 1 Farad Digital

Amplifier: Audiobahn 2200HCX 1600w@1 ohm High Current amp. (Pushed 350-400 watts R.M.S. into each subwoofer)(I have 2)

Remote bass **** right under my headunit. (Very Handy)

Subwoofers: Two 12" Infinity Perfects

Box: Custom made MDF carpeted made by sound advice to fit
perfectly in the trunk of my maxima.

Speakers: Stock Bose & Tweeters

I am getting pics eventually. I absolutely love my system. The only problem is when my bass is cranked up, my sunroof, AC, and overdrive doesnt work ! Haha

Oh yea, the system is well worth over 2000 dollars.

The tempest/shiva will kill or equal Every sub previously mentioned in this post in both sound quality and ability to get loud...There ARE subs that will be beat the tempest/shiva in one or both categories, but those subs are no where near the $140 price of the tempest or the $115 price of the shiva...search on caraudio boards and you'll find all the info about the tempest/shiva u need...This review shows how a tempest outperformed an eclipse 88150 aluminum $$$$$$
http://forum.elitecaraudio.com/showt...threadid=19438
I will be running in the very near future a single tempest in a 2.5^3 ft. stuffed box powered by a hifonics industria pegasus that puts out 400watts at 4 ohms...this setup will cost me $325 shipped and i will be able to match or better the sub output/quality of systems costing many times more...
hope this helps

the subs are made by adire audio and were originally designed for home use, hence the dual 8 ohm vc and very austere looks...They are really efficient and play very low and VERY loud (some guy hit OVER 150db with a single tempest)...adire's website is adireaudio.com and elitecaraudio.com is the place to search for reviews etc...
they are CHEAP too....

kicker all the way

L7's are mean as hell, they are awesome - 12" but good luck paying for enough power to make them happy... I have been down that road, I had sony subs, I had 10" and 12" Solobaric L7's... right now I'm running 2 15" Kicker XPL (kickers best round sub...) The reason I went the XPL's this time instead of L7's was a few reasons... #1 cheaper to power, #2 the Solobaric L7's (square subs) are LOUD as all get out, but the round XPL's sound a tad better.. #3 2 15" XPL's are still SOOOO loud you can't even imagine

If you go solobaric L7's, just do 1 12" but do it in a ported box... it'll be EXTREMELY LOUD (I swear you can test it against and 2 regular 12" "other" brand subs and it'll be better...) and still sound very good... just have fun powering the L7's, when they say 750watts RMS, they mean atleast 750watts hehe

I have tried other stuff, and honestly Kicker is just for me... they're warranty, omg you should see how bad I abuse stuff and stillwater (owns kicker) has never questioned it... just sent me new products, and FAST.

Whatever you do, DONT BUY OFF OF EBAY!!! Stillwater, as well as most sub co's will not honor ANY warranties of items purchased off ebay, DONT DO IT!! trust me.

Also, once you decide on exactly what you want to buy, email me before you purchase as I might be able to hook you up on price b/c of someone I am friends with (owns a retail shop...)

I said it once, I'll say it again....

The Perfect 12.1 sub features a high-rolled butyl-rubber surround and a Curvilinear aluminum cones. That means it hits hard and deep — all the way down to 18 Hz! The drawn-aluminum woofer cone has a smooth sheen — like the skin of a jet airliner. The cone is super-rigid, so it won't distort even when you push it to the max. It's also light and responsive for remarkably high sensitivity. That means they'll squeeze the most volume out of the power you feed them.

The massive cast-aluminum basket and the pole-piece are vented, so the 1-1/2" long, 4-layer voice coil stays cool, even when the music gets hot. They're competition quality, and have a 3-year warranty.

Cant afford it ? Check out Ebay. Still cant ? Go with some cheap JL's, Infinity Kappa's, or some MTX 6-7000's

The best setup that i have heard was this guy that owned a civic... He had 2 1001 X-Tant amps... 2 Ecplise titanium series subs, alpine tv, i think it was a pioneer dvd, a vhs, dynomat the whole car, and alot of other custom stuff... very clean sound... Im saving up for the titanium series with a custom box... You will basically get what you pay for...

You should have known this would be such a controversial topic. You hear such good things about every sub, that it is going to be best for you to go to your local audio shop and check them out. Just trying to help.

Also watch out for some of those audio places... I went to one of them and asked how much a optima yellow top would be and the guy told me 300 dollars, but for me he would drop the price to 240... i should have slaped him...

JL is the all around best

Considering that cost is an option and you are looking for SQ as well as loudness, i.e. you want it to sound like music, not just a rattling in your car, I think your best bet is going to be JL Audio. They have the best warranty in the business, and their customer service is top notch. If you do manage to blow one of their speakers, however unlikely, they will not take 2 months to return it to you, and hey will usually have it back to you in less than three weeks. The w7s are about to start shipping, and that means the w6s will be dropping in price, considerably, probably less than $150 each. I have owned three 10w6s for 18 mos. or so now, and they are incredible. Truly audiophile SQ, that can get loud enough to make your 'boys' retreat into your belly, blur your vision and snap your head forward when a kick drum hits. They are the best bet for anyone who listens to more than one type of music, as their response is quick enough to keep up with techno or a double pedalled kick drum, but resilient enough to play jazz and hit low enough to leave you gasping for air when a super low note hits. I sound like a salesman, but I was actually an installer for several months and it was my experience that JLs could take more punishment than any other sub, too. I never once had someone come in with a blown w6, even a guy who was pushing a total of over 4500 watts through 9 (nine) 10w6s. I am not trying to knock on anyone else's choice, and this is only my experience, but it is 100% true (the objective facts that is). I have seen the eclipse titanium and the former aluminum subs with huge dents in them from someone pushing them too hard. One guy, who incidentally had the same amp I have now, did this to three pairs of the eclipse 15s, before he finally bought a pair of 12w6s, and he had no trouble after that, and he remarked that they sounded warmer, too. Anyway, that's enough from me, hope it helps your decision making process.

Lee

whoever said....

you get what you pay for is completely right. That's the best thing I've heard so far... find a realllly good place to buy from (good prices but still certified) and then just realize, however much you spend, thats how good it will sound... almost doesn't matter what brand it seems like...

Now I'm not saying to go to walmart and spend 900$ on their ish... hehe, you gotta keep it in context

Depending on how much power you're gonna be putting through the sub, get at least a 1 farad capacitor to help supply enough juice for the amps. You don't want your stock alternator to fail you after having the system for two months. I'd still recommend a JL audio stealthbox because it'll take up less room in the trunk and still give you a clean sound though not as clean as something like a Focal Utopia series sub. Then again, you could get a Stllen body kit for the price of one Focal!
