Hey I was driving my dad 1999 SE 5-Speed and I realized this has been a common problem for a while. Well ever since he got his car (currently has 94k) when you let up of the clutch slowly in 1st gear and when your driving slow sometimes even in 2nd there is this weird low pitch sound coming from the back. The oil has just been changed, uses 93 super premium gas, and had a new clutch installed @ ~40k. Any help from my fellow 4th gen maximans (like americans) would be highly appreciated!!!

Well I can't spell out the noise, but if it's the prob. I had it's the throughout bearing! It happens when the car is warm, particularly in traffic stop and go situations! It's a poorly installed clutch. I have a friend who owns a dealership and did the whole kit through the warranty. He said it's not really an issue. He just did it as a favor! He said if it happened again (In so many words) deal with it!

If the sound is coming from the rear of the car it is probably a dragging brake, possibly a dragging handbrake.

If the sound is coming from the front of the car it is probably Maxima Clutch Groan.

A bad clutch release bearing (a/k/a throwout bearing) will make a shrill squeal when the clutch pedal is pressed, even when the car isn't moving. That is not the symptom you report.

Mine throwout didn't make a shrill noise, sounded more like a cute animated giggle for a star wars creature! Perhaps an Ewok or something? If our driver has his dads car, who know where the sound is coming from!

Yes, Nissan will fix this. The real question is, will Nissan pay for the fix? With 94K on the odometer, this Maxima is far past its 36/36 warranty period. As such, repair costs are the owner's responsibility.

Adam - read the story...hehe...you're a Maxi fan, alrite. My mom drives a 94 Accord EX automatic, which I've been having to roll around until my maxi gets fixed. I used to be indifferent about it, but after 50 or so miles in my maxi, I already can't stand driving the accord!

You got a 00 Maxi when you were/are 16?? Man...where can I sign up for a family like that? I used to think I was lucky when I was 16 (1997) and my parents bought me an old 85 Accord SE-i (it had the bombest 12" or 13" stock rims...haha...it actually had rims and not hubbies tho)

Yah I don't know if you read in depth but it was an auction car which was a recovered theft with really only damage to the rims. I paid for it all by myself (been saving up since I was little) and I worked since I was like 14 so I had enough money for car, I know I'm lucky though...

Anyhow, my dad just got back from Nissan and called me and he is really ****ed he said they refused to fix it free because they would have noticed a problem if he came in to Nissan for service. He is really ****ed but in reality it's his own fault IMO, if he did scheduled tune ups and services they would have done it earlier....

thanks for all the help guys!

Yea, that's cool that you paid for it all by yourself, and that you managed to find an auction car that's not a completely messed up ride

rear brake

My friend just had the same thing happen with his 97SE...he took it to the store and was charged something ridiculous like $550 to fix it...they ended up replacing his rear emergency break caliper. Well, atleast they said they did...I wouldn't be surprised if they just adjusted the cable or caliper but charged him for a new one. If it is the caliper, buy a remanufactured one...they should be at the most $150. And I can't imagine it would be hard to replace by yourself. The emergency break isn't a complicated device....
