Okay, last night I was GOING ot install my UDP, but then I was rotating the tires and I noticed I neede dbrakes HARDCORE, because the dealership LIED about changing my brakes and belts.

I bought the parts and, after much trouble (chevelle ran out of gas), finally started in on installing the new pads/rotors. Had trouble with the rear brakes...te replacements are better than the OEM's, but they also required a lot of turning of the pistons, which was a PITA. My friend was trying to install the UDP, but realized he didn't have a breaker bar type tool after all so put the pulleys/belts back on.

So today I am just driving...car feels fine, brakes are nice...I turn off the radio to listen to the car, and I am driving slow in my apartment complex (speedbumps). When I accelerate after stopping, I hear a low-pitched whining, like a moan. EW! WHat is it!? My friend thinks it's the bolt-loosener on my belts (he had to loosen the pulley bolts with that stuff), but I think it might be my rear brakes not releasing properly. How can I check this? ANyone have an idea?

ALso how would I adjust the e-brake?

car specs:
'98 SE Auto
B&M tranny cooler
JWT intake
55k miles
new NGK plats (OEM)

Thanks!

The noise is probably coming from your EGR transformulator valve. Remove and clean it ASAP.

Incorrect accessory drive belt tension might cause unsual sounds, but they would be heard with the engine running but the car stationary. If you hear this mysterious sound only when the car is moving, it is not from the belts.

You mentioned trouble installing the new rear pads. Each rear caliper piston has four notches in the face which presses on the pad. If your replacement pads have a small nub on the steel backing plate, you must align the piston so that the nub fits into any one of those notches. If this was not done the rear brakes are dragging and may be responsible for this sound.

thanks, Daniel. I thought it might be this, but it seems to have ben an easier problem. Because all my pads were so low (I am NEVER EVER going to a dealership--especially executive nissan--for any service unless it's MANDATORY), the piston compression must have been really big, and, while I obviously left the brake fluid resevoir, but apparently the fluid level was still really high (it was 2:30 am, I didn't bother looking!), and the brakes were unable to vent properly. I took some fluid out last night and drove around for a good while...no noise. Hopefully that was the problem. If not, I will take off the pads (I have to replace the rotors shortly anyway) and make sure the piston is lined up properly. THANK YOU for your help, Daniel!
