colored gauge needles
Eh? Are you talking about the indiglo needles?
Those fit a 98 Maxima.
But if you're just talking about different colored needles, the easiest solution is to take your dash apart, take a marker, and color in your needles.

I colored mine red with them still on there, just do it very carefully so you don't mark the guages too. I just did the top of mine, because you cant see the side. They even light up a pretty good red color.

(The site is down at the moment for some reason, but I know several people on this board have gotten the indiglo needles for the Max from them.)

No... you CAN take the needles out. For instructions on how to take your needles off go here: http://www.maximadriver.com and go to the HOW2 section and read the How2 on putting in white-faced gauges from Import Intelligence.)
What they MIGHT be refering to is that the indiglos might not shine entirely through the plastic because it is a lot less opaque than the needle in the 95-96 models.
In the 95-95 models, you get a glowing needle. In the 97+, you might get a light reflecting off your gauges and a "glow-ring" around your needles.
(Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

I know I've seen them there, but the company told me that the kits wont work for a 98 maxima. Something to do with nissan making it impossible to take the needles out on that year maxima.

I used a red Sharpie marker, they are pretty bright. What you would have to do is take the guages out, and take the plastic cover of carefully, very easy, takes about 15 mins or so. I replace the bulbs behind my dash red too, so the whole thing is red.
