Hi Maxima fans! Ain't this list great! I'm an engineer in CO and I've been a lurker since I bought my 97SE back in May. I was looking for a nice '97 or '98 for about a month and came across this well cared for, private owner jewel with only 35K miles. And it had the 5-spd and leather interior I was wanting. I've already learned a lot about the car through all your posts, and I'm looking forward to adding the popular performance up-grades as the pocket-book (and wife) allows. I've been a long time Nissan owner, and the Maxima is parked next to our '83 Datsun 4x4 KC (212K miles and no smoke) and '95 Altima GXE (65K). Hard to go wrong with a Nissan!

My first question / problem is: Lately, sometimes when I start out in 1st I get a little clutch chatter. Normally I would guess the clutch is nearing replacement time.. but not with only 40K miles. Anyone experience this with the stock clutch? Also, does the warranty cover clutch pressure plates, etc? I can't make out from the warranty info that it does. The warranty seems to specify only the "clutch cover and housing," with no exclusion or mention of any other clutch parts. Any help on this is appreciated.

My '99 Maxima (bought new, gently driven, 18K miles) exhibits chatter on occasion. It also emits the "Maxima clutch groan" sound from time to time. I've driven stick-shift cars for years and never worn out a clutch... but this one might break that perfect record. If and when I replace the clutch, I will NOT use factory replacement parts. If the original unit wasn't satisfactory I will try something else.

Bill, many have experienced this. Not a problem. Just ignor the chatter unless it gets worst, or show signs of slipping.

Thanks for the reply, guys. OK, I guess "they all do that" to some extent, unless you have a performance clutch. So I'll just drive, enjoy and fuggedaboudit.
