i'm thinking about installing a laptop in my max to replace the audio system (mp3/dvd/map software ...)

is it a good idea?

does anyone know if it is possible to interface the ecu with a laptop to get engine speed/temperature etc?

If you decide to put a laptop in your Maxima, please put a large, flashing light on your car so that people on the road with more sense than you have can avoid you.

Seriously, putting distracting things in your car is never a good idea, you need to be paying attention to the road. If you want to play MP3s, get a new head unit, if you want maps, get a navigation system or a GPS setup, I don't want to even think about someone watching a DVD and driving at the same time.

I will have to agree with guido on that idea. It could be dangerous, and where would you put it or hide it(just curious).

Alex C. Peper knows how, and he has built a business around this subject. Go to http://www.obd-2.com/

i do not plan to sacrifice safety in any way. what i was thinking about doing is separating the display, mounting it in the place of the radio and installing the rest of the computer behind it. some of the smaller laptops will fit in the max audio bay. i will not use original keyboard and mouse but will install a one handed keyboard. i belive that with carful config it will require less attention than a regular radio.
