Is your MAFS broken or is this a hypothetical question?

The MAFS may have failed because it is dirty. This could be a consequence of ...
- an over-oiled aftermarket air cleaner filter
- a stuck-closed Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve
- excessive blowby due to worn or broken piston rings

One "motorhead" magazine described rehabilitating a dirty MAFS by cleaning it with carburetor cleaner. The Nissan factory service manual does not mention this possibility, so the dealer does not even offer to do it. However, you or your independent technician could try this. If the MAFS is already "dead" you have little to lose.

How would a stuck PCV or excessive blow-by affect the MAF? I don't understand...

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation system draws fresh filtered air through a rubber hose from the engine air intake duct downstream of the air cleaner filter. This air mixes with "blowby" and oily vapors inside the engine crankcase area. This mix then passes through the Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, through two short rubber hoses, and into the intake manifold, and is burned along with the air/fuel mixture.

If the PCV valve or associated hoses become clogged that oily blowby has to escape the engine somehow, and the easiest route is the normal fresh air intake path. In this case dirty air is introduced to the engine air intake duct, mixes with fresh air, and is swept along through the Throttle Body, the intake manifold, and is burned. Unfortunately the dirty air leaves deposits all along the interior of the plastic ductwork, the TB, and the intake manifold. When the engine is turned off some of this dirty air surrounds the Mass Air Flow Sensor and forms deposits on it. The MAFS is a vital engine control sensor. It is also sensitive, easily damaged, and expensive. Perhaps you have seen an air cleaner filter which had black "gunge" on the inside surface, which is not where you would expect it. That dirt came from blowby.

If your engine has excessive blowby due to worn or broken piston rings the same scenario applies. The volume of blowby is more than the PCV valve can handle and it escapes through the rubber hose hose which normally supplies clean filtered air to the engine interior.

Parts price questions can often be asked by searching the on-line catalog of Web-based auto parts vendors such as www.PartsAmerica.Com or www.AutoZone.Com

PartsAmerica.com lists a remanufactured Mass Air Flow Sensor

A1 Cardone #74-10035 for $278 + s/h + $35 core charge (deposit).

Your car idles like crap and in some cases the car will stall. Basically your Air Fuel mixture is no longer in balance.

If the Mass Air Flow Sensor is completely dead or disconnected ...
- The Malfunction Indicator Lamp will turn on.
- The Engine Control Module will set Diagnostic Trouble Code 0102.
- The ECM enters fail-safe mode and prevents the engine from exceeding 2,400 rpm.

You could find one used for about 50-75 dollars... Junk yard, craigs list, or on the forum f/s threads... But they are "as is"

Or Auto zone has them for about 220 after you return the used one...

Or the stealership has them for 400+...

You decide...

I would suggest the "brand new" auto zone or another after market MAF... I have the Auto Zone One and Im happy I did it...
