Combination meter from late 4th gen fits an early 4th gen?

So, those of us in early 4th gen Maximas are stuck with these mechanical odometers... the nice combination meters from the later 4th gen (with LCD odometers) seem to be of the exact same size. Is it possible to connect up a late 4th gen combination meter to an early 4th gen? Would the multi trip-odometer function work?

Of course, there are those mileage issues. You probably couldn't get Nissan to certify it for you, seeing as this is non-standard. But hey, I'm over 100k now, so what difference does it make? What got me on this idea, is that I saw a terribly wrecked '99 with a perfectly intact interior. Would be nice to swap, if possible.
